700 long action build question

Does anyone know if a factory Remington 700 short action barrel will thread directly to a long action receiver. Was thinking of a short action caliber build on my long action receiver and just using a factory barrel for now. Thanks

It will, but it likely won’t headspace properly. The indexing of the barrel will be out of whack as well. A gunsmith will need to set the headspace.

Yeah the issue is all about headspace and nothing to do with action length.

Thanks. I just wasn’t sure if they had used a different thread or overall diameter. I’m assuming the shoulder would have to be set back to correct the head spacing ? I might just try a rem/age .308 barrel setup.
