Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

good as hell. i love mine for varmint shooting. i shoot sub moa with mine. i use the blackhills blue box with the hornady v-max round. knocks 'em dead.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Mine fires after closing the bolt all the time.
I close the bolt, take the safety off, breathe, relax, sight picture and press the trigger. Boom.

On another note, mine shoots OK, not anything to write home about. It does quite well with the Winchester Ranger 69 grain HPBT load.

I still wish I would have bought either the 10PC or Hunter Max instead. Better trigger, better stock and DBM to boot.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

I had one and traded it for a 12 FV. When I got it brand new the bolt would not close on a factory round. I sent it back to Remington and they claimed they fixed it. It came back and I couldn't hold 4 moa with factory or hand loads. Got the 12 FV and it shoots 3/4 moa every day and on good days near .5 moa.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Obviously, Remington doesn't enjoy the reputation it once had. I think in general that's because accuracy out of the box has increased and Remington is still looking for ways to hit this "upgrade market" cheaper.

That said. During this years deer rifle sight-in, a kid brought his SPS tactical out (in .223) and shot shot sub MOA @ 100 and 200 and MOA @ 300. I spotted for him at the 300 yd. line.

I used to say Remington was "the" off-the-shelf accuracy rifle. And, they have always been good. But, since the late nineties, I've said Savage was the rifle to beat for that. That based on purchasing a number of them and shooting friends rifles as well. In the past couple years, I think Remington has woken up to the fact they are being out-gunned in their long held position as best accuracy rifle out of the box. and have done something about it. Upgraded machinery and training are helping to produce what I think are better rifles than what you could get from Remington 4-10 years ago.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

yep good rifle. Mine came in the hogue stock which i did not care for. I changed that out for a stiffer one and it shoots great now.

69 smk with 24 grains of varget is a tack driver. Not a velocity whore, but it is the most accurate I have found with it.

I was really really annoyed with the rifle at first because it would not shoot any of the "normal" lighter weight bullets I had laying around. Once I quit screwing around with those and got into the heavier ones for the 9 twist (69smk and 70 vld) it shot great.
For the cost of a "like new" stock I got the rifle shooting like a champ. I think you would do fine with it.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

mine has never gone off without me squeezing the trigger. that goes for all of my 700's. mine will shoot lighter grain stuff sub moa. ive never shot anything over 60 grain in mine, so im not sure how the heavier stuff would fair.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

they are great i love mine and thats what i bought mine for also. like the others have mentioned it doesnt like the light grain stuff or atleast mine doesnt but i prefer the heavier rounds for predators doesnt tear them up as much. mine actually loves the 75grain bthp from hornady .5moa or less if i do my part. Hope this helps, also ive never had any of my 700s go off when i close the bolt and bet i never will.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Good rifle for the price. Stock ain't the greatest. Needed a little work. Shoots moa and better out to 300yr with white box 62grain. No problems with the trigger. Have owned a few 700's but never any accidental discharges. Get it suppressed and you will love it.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Just put that same rifle (223) on layaway 7 days ago. I'm gonna use it as my snowmobile rifle this winter as I transit the frozen rivers and countryside of Alaska. Should be a great fast predator rifle.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

did some looking around and found on the savage web site a model 10 precision hunter looks really good think i might get that over the remington anyone have a model 10 pc and if so how does it shoot

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

My SPS 223 likes 77gr sierras, 23gr AA2230, win brass, and wsr primers..5 most of the time.I discovered this by accident.A friend gave me some loads to shoot up!

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Interesting to hear of people's success with 75 grain class bullets with the 1:9 twist. I don't mean to hijack but I would be interested in hearing what the heaviest bullets that people have had success with in these.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

Mine would shoot around 1 MOA with 60 gr bullets. Anything heavier you could see starting to yaw at 100 yds. The barrel appeared to be shy of the 1 in 9 twist they claimed.
I love it now that APA rebarreled it and chambered for 223 AI.
Buy a Savage.

Re: 700 sps tactical in 223

I have shot the 69 and 77 out to 500 and they work well.I was shooting an 8in plate.i dont have a crono so i dont know the velocity.also i upgraded the stock to an old PSS stock i had.The load is close to max.
