Experts-
I have a 700 SPSV 308 with the X-Mark Pro trigger on it and was wondering about adjusting it. I took the little alan screw out altogether and would like to reduce it even more. I don't hunt, just paper and steel. I found some instructions for adjusting it but not sure if they apply to the X-Mark Pro trigger (see below). Can anything be done to make this trigger better other than replacing it?
Thanks!

Adjusting the trigger:
Back out the spring tension (trigger pull) screw to a light trigger pull that is adequate to keep some pressure on the trigger but is very light (trigger pull will be set later). Next back out the sear engagement screw, and the over travel screws several turns.
Once the screws are adjusted as above, close the bolt (without dry firing) and SLOWLY turn the sear engagement screw in until the firing pin is released. From this point, back the screw out a half turn. Without recocking the firing pin, screw the over travel screw in until you feel it contact the trigger lightly, preventing the trigger from moving. From this point, back the over travel screw out a quarter turn. When you pull the trigger at this point there should be a very slight movement of the trigger.
To adjust the trigger pull, adjust the spring tension screw to a pull that you like. As you turn the screw in the trigger pull will be increased and the pull will be reduced as the screw is backed out.</div></div>

Re: 700 X-Mark Pro Trigger

The screw on the trigger shoe itself can be removed, but without adjusting the internal stuff, that is as low as it can go. You can adjust the weight further with the trigger re-set/pull weight screw. This is the screw on the lower front of the trigger body. a good clean out with some lighter fluid will clean it and lube it at the same time. Other than this, you can decrease the sear connection a little bit, but if you do this, make sure you function test for safety and then reseal the screw. The glue that Rem puts on the screws is very difficult to break usually, some brake cleaner or acetone will help, and maybe some heat... it is easy to round these out just trying with pressure. The sear engagement screw is the screw on the rear of the trigger body.

The final screw is considered the overtravel stop screw (top screw on the front of the body), but in actuality all it does is reset the trigger when the safety is on. When you adjust the sear engagement, it may become necessary to back this out just a little bit to allow the safety to function again, this depends on how much the sear engagement is changed.

Hope this helps a little bit. I personally would start by a good clean out and adjust just the pull weight screw, so far my experience has been that they are fairly crisp with factory setting, so adjusting the sear engagement is rarely necessary, and you can generally get these down to around 2.5 to 3 pounds without doing so.

Re: 700 X-Mark Pro Trigger

Be careful, The lowest you can get it down to and still be safe is about 2.5 pounds. You took an alan screw all the way out? Hmmm...
You need to just figure out what each screw is for. It is pretty easy to tell once you start messing with it.

The screw that adjusts trigger weight will leave the trigger totally slack and sorta flopping around if it is backed too far out. What you want for the lightest possible setting that is safe is to get the spring tension on the pull weight screw to be just enough to reset the trigger to its forward position with no slop after the trigger has been pulled.

You can do this by just making sure the chamber is empty and dry firing the gun. Then, without moving the bolt, adjust the screw (front bottom screw) until the trigger feels like it has no tencion on it and it will stay back without reseting itself forward. Then slowly turn the screw in by a little bit and keep wiggling the trigger until it just barely has enough spring tension to move itself back forward after being pulled back. This may not be the most technically advanced way to adjust that screw, but it certainly work for me.

The front top screw is the overtravel screw if I remember properly. I would adjust the back screw first. The back screw is the sear engagement screw (again by memory). The sear screw will basically determine how much the trigger has to move before the sear is disengaged and the gun fires. Give yourself enough sear engagement to make sure that nothing happens without you wanting it to later on. Do not set the sear where it is hanging by a nats's eyebrow. You can still get a pretty crisp trigger pull even with some overlap between the trigger and sear. The overtravel screw can be adjusted last and just changes how much your trigger moves towards your shoulder after the sear is dropped.

That's my try at explaining it. Just get to know what everything does on the trigger and figure out how to make it SAFE and how you want it at the same time. The last thing you want is for a trigger to be making up its own mind on when to go off.

Re: 700 X-Mark Pro Trigger

GREAT INFO!! Thank you guys for taking the time to type this up. I'll give it a shot and see how it goes. I hope it makes a big difference in trigger pull.

Re: 700 X-Mark Pro Trigger

Bumping an old thread to get more opinions, just got a new rifle with the new X-Mark Pro trigger that has the adjustment screw in the trigger shoe, my last X-Mark in a 5R was the first generation that replaced the original style rem trigger in '08 or so - that one did not have the screw in the trigger shoe and I was able to adjust it using all the screws down to 2lbs with no creep and an acceptable break. This new one came in out of the box at 5.5lbs even though their paperwork says it should be 3.5lbs, and the lowest it will go with the screw all the way out is 4lb.

Now to the question - how many people have actually had success using all the screws to adjust these new triggers down to 2lb when they get a heavy one out of the box? I don't even want to mess with it if the success rate is low, I'll just sell it for whatever it's worth and get something else.

thanks

Re: 700 X-Mark Pro Trigger

I bought a remi last year and it never went below 3.5#, I put a Jewell trigger and it tightened up my groups drastically. I just got a new remi same situation. So no big hopes on the xmark.

Thanks, I'm thinking I'll just ditch this one and get that $125 timney trigger.
