75grn Hornady A-max query

Hi Guys,

I know that this question has probably already been asked like a hundred times, but what twist will be best to stabilize the 75g A-Max out of a .223?

I'm just too lazy to search through all the old posts. There, I've admitted the truth!

1-16 should be fine but that is from memory, to lazy to check my load data.












just messing with you, 1-9 may do it but 1-8 will definitely do it, 1-7 does nice and lets you jump to 80's and 90's

i had a 1:8 twist in my 22-250AI and they shot like a laser, i had to seat them to the throat to shoot. tried them in my 223 ar mag lentgh too short shot terrible.

Glad I scrolled down before firing off a scathing reply!

got a Howa with a 1:12 and the heaviest she'll shoot is the 60g V-Max, so i knew you were messin with me.

Going to reload in bulk for my buddy's AR and Robinson XCR, so I'm just wondering what bullet to go with.

The Robinson is 1:9 (Just checked this morning) and I think the AR has the same twist, if it's not the same it will be faster.

Really just looking for some recommendations for loading the .223 for ranges out to 300/400yds, not really long range, but better than the 75' indoor range we're using at the moment.

A 1:8 twist is best for a 75 Amax. A 9 twist may or may not stabilize it.

The 75 Amax is not meant to feed from a mag on an ar15. The 75 BTHP's are. If you are going to load the amax seat them out and single load them.

If you're just making plinker loads a 55 FMJ would be fine. 9 twist I think 69 grainers would be about the heaviest you could use.

A 9 twist is marginal at best for the 75 amax, you will want a 8 or faster. Bryan Litz’s software that comes with his book supports this as does JBM if you know the bullets over all length.

If you stick with BTHP's in the 75 and 77 grain area (not the VLD's) you can get away with it, as those are short enough to stabilize. Or use the berger 70 grain VLD which has the same BC as the 77 smk but can be pushed to 69 smk velocities.

The 75s are nice(not amax). That is what I shoot in my spr (1x7 twist). High bc and a pretty low price. You'll like them.

I could not get the 75 gr amax to stabilize in a cz 527 which has a 1-9 twist. I do believe that hornady has since labeled that bullet with a 1-8 twist recommendation instead of the prior 1-9 it had earlier.

Guys,

Thank you one and all!

I'm kind of stuck with the barrel twist at 1:9, It's my Buddy's rifle and it's not that old, so re-barreling is not an option.

I'm not married to the 75g A-max, I just thought that it would be a good bullet to use.

Thank you for all of the other suggestions, I'll check them out and cost the job for loading 1000 of them at a time.

Try them in the 9. They might work. I use them in an 8 twist POF and they work very well. But if not try the 75grn BTHP, which is a little shorted and might stabilize better, or the 68grn BTHP.
