Through a series of trades I ended up with a Rem 7mm-08 for pretty much free. As I just finished a 6.5mm Creedmoor build, I'm not looking to do a really serious technical build. The issue with the 7MM is that the stock has been cut and repaired (i think to accommodate a smaller shooter) The barrel has also been cut down to about 18 inches. I personally am not a fan of those modifications. I'm considering a couple options. 1. Make into a hunting rifle, replace stock (I don't need a super precision stock, but a decent hunting stock), and change to a 24" barrel, maybe add a trigger and lower metal with magazine. 2. I have a plastic Remmington stock with rubber grips, and maybe keep the barrel the same or put a new barrel, keep trigger, and lower metal on it and sell it.

Which option would you guys recommend, what barrel, or hunting stock would you recommend? Another option is just to sell this as is for a project gun. I haven't looked into 7MM-08 a lot so I'm open to ideas.

Thanks!

Sell it on Gunbroker, start at 1$ with no reserve. That's a perfect set up for youth/smaller women in rifle hunting states. Someone will buy that. If I was going to keep it as a hunting rifle I would probably just put on a new barrel like one of the Criterions with the barrel nut in whatever short action caliber. The only real downside to that gun is the cut down barrel, 18 is way short.

If this were mine, I would change the stock to something I liked, then shoot it to see what I had. If it shot good, there you are, if not, then start with the other mods. It might not be broke and therefore might not need fixing. If it is a hunting rifle you are after, then why would you want more than an 18 inch barrel? I have a 7-08 with a 17 inch barrel and it is really a handy little rifle.

Good luck with this project. Let us know how it works out.

You want something like this rifle on top, 24" 7mm08 with H-S precision stock, got that on sale for 200 bucks at Midway, it has the older Rem style trigger set at 19oz, and a very good shooter.

Re : 7MM-08 build assistance.

This has been talked about somewhere else on this forum before but I think myself a 7mm is nothing more than a neck down 8mm they are both rimless and very close in size that means the mag and extractor should work as is so i then would ask myself why couldn't i get away with just a barrel change i know the Egyptian has metric threads 26mm x 1.5 RH don't know what the threads are on a 7mm barrel though that someone else will have to bring to light.
