I'm building a custom rifle using the stiller tac300 action, AI AX chassis, jewel trigger. I need help choosing a barrel. The rifle will be 7mm mag and will be used for hunting and competition. I'm looking for a match grade heavy barrel, yes I can carry it out hunting. If I need to walk 100 miles I'll take my sendero.

I have no idea what length, twist, no idea what contour is about, and brand.
I know there's plenty of great brands but I only know a few, krieger being one.

If there is another thread on this that my search couldnt find please link it.

Thank you

Re: 7mm mag need barrel help.

REsearching this myself as well...Buckey hit the most popular options, you could also do the 1 in 8.5 if you have plans of shooting the new berger bullet coming out, which is a little longer than the popular 180s. They aren't out yet and who knows when they will be so this may not be a consideration for you.

Re: 7mm mag need barrel help.

1-9" twist will shoot 162's-180' well, possibly might be able to go down to 140's as well. For the new 195 Berger I would get a 1-8' twist, but if I were you I would concentrate on the 180 Hybrid Berger. Another thing, I would go #7 or MTU contour, it will take out the kick and adding a muzzle brake is almost essential.

Well i got everything figured out.

Brux barrel, 1/9 twist, Varmint contour, over 26"

only problem is the only two lenths that are available is 27" and 29" is one better than the other for 7mm?

Re: 7mm mag need barrel help.

Whoever installs the barrel will cut it and re-crown it at the length you want. Most barrel makers recommend you cut at least 1 inch of the muzzle of a blank so a 27" blank with finish at 26" max. I think 26" is plenty for a 7 mag but some like them longer.
