7MM Rem Mag build, questions...

OK guys, had a few questions, and Im sure alot more as the build progresses.

BAsically, short version is, Ive been doing my practice and building up for long range shooting with my Rem 700 SPS .308.
So, after getting in range time with it, and starting to learn about windage/elevation/bullet drop/bullet weight, etc...Ive decied to build a rifle with a little more "Hot Rod" flavor to it. Hence, the 7MM.
Even though it's going to be a build, it still needs to be a "reasonable" build...this is not going to be a no expense spared build, and some $4-$5K rifle
Wanting to stay in the $2000-$2500 range for teh rifle.

So, my plan is to use:
Rem 700 LA
Bartlein or Kreiger
Timney
B&C or McMillan

I figure that will get me in the $1200-$1500 range minus labor.

My first question IS:
Since Im going Rem 700 LA...instead ofpaying @ $400 JUST for the action, wouldnt it be a better idea to pay $450 for whole rifle? Then sell off what I dont need? And/or keep what I cant sell? Seems logical. Anyone want to shoot that theory down?

Barrel..anyone care to give me some input on which one they would use and why?

It seems that Jewel and Timney are teh "go to" on triggers, and Ive chose Timney, because it seems that even though Ive read positive on both, Ive read more negative about jewel than I have Timney. I KNOW Im gonna get some feedback onthose that use a Jewel, and tell me Im crazy and they lvoe thier Jewel, and thats FINE. Im just using Timney, and that's it...sure, you can add your feedback/opinon if you still care to.

Stock, well...Ive got my B&C for my Rem 700 .308 (not installed yet) the other day, and I like it, alot. But, thinking maybe going with some different for the 7MM build..McMillan maybe??


And, last question in this post...Anyone know of anyone in the Pearland/Friendswood/League City/Houston area that can do labor?

First off...The SH classifieds is your friend

It's saved me both time and money on more than a few occasions.

Barrels.
Depending on how much time you've got allotted for your build will likely determine which barrel company you choose if you plan on ordering vs finding one that someone wants to let go.Bartlein has a long wait these days according to what I've read.Krieger usually isn't so backed up on orders.I ordered a Schneider not too long ago and had it in a month.My Benchmark 7mm took about 2 months.

Are you thinking of getting the 700 long action trued,blue printed and all that? If so a custom action would end up costing not much more.I think they are worth the extra money on my builds every time I grab one from the safe.They have better resale value later as well.

Are you planning on using detachable bottom metal ? Because
Manners has their http://mannerstocks.com/mcs-dbm-mini-chassis/ Might save you a little money on gunsmithing.It's a do it yourselfer.

You could get a spring kit for the stock trigger and save a little $ till later ??? http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/default.aspx?productNumber=654821

Or you can do what I did and shop around for a used rifle with all the features you want.I bought a used one like I wanted and saved a $1000 or more off what it would of cost me new.It was one of the better gunsmiths personal rifle!Friggen HAMMER and one of the better decisions I've made in my life.

Barrel, there are a lot of good manufacturers out there. Both my Broughton and Rocks have shot well.

If you are looking for someone in the Houston area to do the work, a lot of Hide members are now using Kenny Porter in Lake Jackson. He might be super busy right now as he has a normal job during the day and gunsmith by night. I have seen a lot of work from the gunsmiths around town and Kenny is the only person I take my stuff to now locally.

personally,for the price your wanting to stay at i would buy a factory winchester all weather shadow extreme SS.they'll run you about 1,100 if you shop around.they come with stainless fluted barrels and a stainless pre-64 style action(better than a remy 700)IMHO.have the barrel rechamber by a good gun smith just to get the barrel and action squared and to get rid of the factory chamber(factory barrels are usually pretty good,it's there chambers that suck.have the action blue printed,lugs lapped,and throw that dude in a bell carlson medalist stock and you will come in under 2,000 dollars.can spend the savings on a nice scope and you will have a sweet rifle that's not so heavy that you can't do anyting else but shoot it on a bench and it ought to be a shooter.7mm's rock,if only our dumb ass pentagon and government would see the light and quit arming our boys with pigs like the .308 and 300 WM.

You can't go wrong with a Rock Creek. I am partial to them and Krieger, but as most will tell you, any of the top end barrel makers produce quality stuff.

Kenny Porter does have a very good reputation locally. The only other local guy that I have dealt with is Pete Pieper over at Precision barrel works. He has done some work for me and worked on a friends rifle. He does good work. If you want a quicker turn around, he might be the guy since he does this for a living. He is in Hempstead.

If you like the B&C, at least seriously consider the McM and Manners.

Just thinking also, if you are interested in slinging the 7mm bullet, look at some of the other 7mm offerings such as the WSM and SAUM.

I think you are on the right track taking a new 700 and selling off the parts you don't need to offset the cost. Barrel wise Kreiger, Bartlien and Rock are all great barrels, can't go wrong with any of them. Rifle basix might be a good choice for a trigger or at least an alternative choice. Stocks are like flavors - pick what you like.

Caliber wise , both the 7mm Mag and the WSM are great calibers, but the .260 will run with them to 1000 and at a lot less in recoil and cost of components and with a much longer service life. Been shooting it for about 5 years and it's still my favorite long range comp round.

The 7 Mags run higher BC bullets and run them faster then a 260. I don't see how you can say they can keep up.

The 140 A-max BC is .585 @ 2800fps Drop at 1000 is 308.3" drift 71.4"

The 162 A-max BC is .625 @ 3000fps Drop @ 1000 is 253.9 and drift 59"

In the drop department that is 5.4 MOA at 1000 yards. Sounds like a lot but in real world shooting you dope for elevation should be stable for your rifle. It you dialed in good info you should score a hit. The real challenge for most is the wind and the 7mm WSM bests the .260 by only 1.24 minutes at 1000. That isn't going to make or brake a good shooter.

Don't get me wrong, I like the 7's and built several and if hunting where the energy is needed the 7's are great calibers. But if the OP is thinking about a match gun the .260 really has a lot of other benifits worth looking at.

Hey Steve...Im thinking that you helped me last year as well...when it came to my .308 I bought. So, nice to see ya still helping out around here!

Well, I do plan on using a DBM, yes. Barrel wait time not to concerened with mainly because of $$$$$, and teh fact that I cant drop all the coin at once on a rifle like this, hence, me wanting to "piece it out" and build over time....pick up a trigger here, stock there, barrel over yonder...

My wife is very understanding, but if she thought or knew I spent THIS kind of money on "just a gun", and when I already have a nice collection of them going...well, let's jsut say if I can avoid telling her the cost, I will do so

Lake jackson is right down teh road from me, so that's nice to know. I will say that Im not 100% sold on the Bartlein/Krieger, I just mentioned those 2 because I know they have outstanding reputation, and I know how much they run ($$$) and fit my budget.

So, if anyone has some opinions on otehr makers, well, throw them out there..and if you have idea on cost, better yet.

Thank you for your reply, but if there is one thing Im 100% completely sold on, it would be the Rem 700 action. I would have to even say that chances are if someone GAVE me any other action, I would either A)give it away or B)sell it, and STILL use teh Rem700 action.
Why? Well, lets just say Im weird like that, and we can leave it at that.

Thanks for input...yes, like I mentioned, I AM open for other possible barrels...I am thinking of having it fluted though.

I guess once I get my B&C actually mounted and out to range and shooting, can make better call on if I like it that much. So, we'll see...

Because of availability of the 7MM Rem Mag ammo is why that one and not the WSM/SAUM.

I am thinking of getting into reloading, so yes, that would solve that, BUT, is nice to know that just about any store, atleast around here carry the 7MM Rem Mag. (I picked up some 7MM Rem Federal 150 grain, yes, SP, for 20 rounds cost me $16)
Yes, I understand that to get the most out of teh 7 Mag is gonna take more than the Fed SP...my point is that, again, ammo IS cheap, available, and in a pinch, can get some. In fact, I have an EASIER time finding ammo for teh 7MM than I do my .308 or .223!!!!!!!!!!! And that my friends is a FACT!
ANY and EVERY time I walk into a sporting goods store (or Wal Mart for that matter), I head over to ammo, and try and buy 1-2 boxes, regardless. I would say 50% of the time, .308 or .223 is sold OUT, but yet, there sits the 7MM.

So, you add in that the 7MM is a Hot Rod, and gets job done EXCEPTIONALLY well, and for what I need it for, will FAR outshoot anything Im capable of hitting for teh time being anyways.

Thank you...here is my deal on why the 7MM over teh .260. Number one, I plan on doing another AR and was thinking of doing the 6.5 Grendel for it, OR, I have given serious thought to teh .260 as well.
So, either way. it will be very close and if I did THIS BA build in a .260, well, that gives me 2 guns very close to one in the same (BA in .260 and an AR in .260 or 6.5G)
So, wanted to stay away from that. And, for two, the 7MM will not only be for LR shooting, it will be used for hunting, and carries a tad more punch than the .260

Im just trying to space my rifles out a "little bit" and not get TOO close to one another..make sense? Also, about a 6-8 months ago, I asked about the .257 Weatherby, and I got a HUGE support for it, and even though it is still a ways off (as in probaly 2-3 years from now) I am gonna pick up a rifle chambered for the .257 Weatherby.


BAscaily saying that even thuogh I KNOW the .260 is a hot rod in itself, it's just that I dont see me owning one in a BA rifle...maybe an AR like I mentioned above, but not a BA.

Just to clarify to all...YES, this gun will be built mostly for LR shooting in mind, but it WILL also see some hunting duty. Much? Probaly not. Would have to even say that it willsee very little hunting, so much so, that I COULD go either way with the .260 or 7MM for that reason.
Im just choosing the 7MM because, again, it DOES have more punch to it...especially at 300-400 yards..

Not sure why, other than I thought it was a cool picture..here is a pic of (from left to right of course) a .50 (head spacing cart. used by my Grandpa in WWII, Top Turret Gunner on a B-17G, "Mary Alice") 7MM Rem Mag (150 grain, Fed SP), .308 (168 grain, Hornady BTHP), and a .223 (55 grain Win).

Pretty much has nothing to do with the topic at hand, other than shows teh 7MM

OK guys, have some "tech" questions for ya...obviously doing my homework, and as Im getting closer, coming across more details that I need to get some opinions on. So.....


Weight:
Since this rig will be used primarily for LR shooting BUT will be used for hunting from time to time, what do you think the target weight I should shoot for? @7 to 7 1/2LBS? less, like 6 to 6 1/2LBS? Or, even lighter?
Since this IS gonna be my first build like this, wondering where I should save my weight...stock? Barrel?

Speaking of barrel...what do you think an ideal length I should target? 20"? 22" I havent done alot of research on velocities and length barrel for the 7MM, so I need some help there. The 7 mag favor any particular length?

Might want to think about the McRee Precision chassis, it has bottom metal already there so that's one thing you don't have to buy. I've decided that's gonna be the route I go with my 7RM build.

That (.280 AI) is gonna be a nice shooting rig...I just read up on that cartridge couple weeks ago...flat shooting, not alot of recoil. I read up on it in Shooting Times..April '11. They did the write up on a rifle built by Dakota Arms in that caliber. Rifle ended up at 8Lbs 4 Oz with a 24" Lilja barrel...

Consider buying the Remington 700P in 7RemMag. I have one with Just bedding the stock, trigger job and a Little Bastard break on it, will put 5 162gr Amax into a hole a dime will cover at 100 and I have shot a 4" 600 yd 10 shot group in a match. Don't pass on the break though it will rapidly wear you out without it. Once you get the rifle you can always add more to it later.

If you want your rod to be a little hotter, get it reamed to 7mm STW. Check the numbers, 140 gr ballistic tip, its pretty flat. Kicks like a my-yule though haha I need a brake on mine. Don't feel it when shooting game but after several shots at the range it starts to get old.

I have thought about that, yes, AND, to me anyways, make the most sense to do that (buy ANY Rem 700 chambered for the 7 Mag that I come across on for a good deal, new or used)

I figure that if I buy a complete rifle, I can A)start shooting from get go, and make changes/upgrades as I go along, sell off what I take off (or try to) or B)strip it from get go, and sell off parts I dont need (or try to).


To be honest, I really dont see why I would buy JUST the action, when I can have a complete rifle for literally teh same price, and since no one has shot down that threory, Im guessing that Im not the first to think of that, and seems to probaly be the thing to do in a case like mine.

So guys, any info on barrel length?

I did some reading about LR and saying that I really need to stay at 22-24", up to 26" when dealing with cartridges that are in the 3000+ FPS range, and that barrels in the 18-20" range should be avoided.
Reason? Says that muzzle velocities are degraded to unaccetable levels and muzzle flash is increased.

Also said that say you take a .300 Win Mag, and put it behind a 18-20" barrel, and you turn the .300 WM into a .30-06/.308..

Also said that a 22" should be a mininum length, but it too is still really too short to efficiently handle high po cart (3000+ FPS).

Goes onto say that to really to get teh most out of it, that a 25-26" barrel needs to be used, get teh most out of cart..anything less results in excessive muzzle flash and recoil, along with wasting powder, and get only marginal results.

All o fthat being said, anyone care to add to it? I currently have a 26" barrel on my .308, and was hoping to shorten up this rig a good amount, BUT, if Im not gonna get teh results I want, then, guess Iwill keep it a little longer. Still thinking of doing less than a 26"...maybe 23-24".

So, anyone care to chime in on it..maybe someone out there has a 7MM Rem Mag..with a 20"-22" barrel and give me some feedback???

Recently bought a Remington 700 ADL 7mmRM with a custom composite stock and inexpensive 3x9 scope for $300 that I can shoot nickle or smaller sized groups with a cold barrel at 100 yards with (also have the original wood stock). Bought it from a friend because it shot good for me on several trips to the range. While unfortunately find the the factory 7mmRM 700 ADL barrel goes away after about five shots when gets warm. Watching this thread closely for any 7mmRM Remington 700 ideas to improve it. Seems a barrel change would allow me to shoot more before accuracy goes away. Waiting for a barrel to cool down is no fun when have limited time to practice - while when hunting it usually only takes one (and only need a few for rare back-up).

A new better barrel will probably cost more than paid - not absolutely needed but wanted. What length and twist? What barrel brand / maker would you to put on an older Remington 7mmRM model 700 ADL?

We hunt mule deer in eastern Oregon with huge open desert spaces where often to attempt close approach is not possible. Bought the 7mmRM as an upgrade to a 30-06 Remington 700 ADL my boy has now.

26 inch and 1-9 twist, you should be able to develop good velocity and handle the 168, 175, and 180 grain bullets.

Am having a 7mmRM done by WmRoscoe to replace one of mine, and really looking forward to it.

But I would consider the 7WSM if I didn't already have a couple-thou brass, dies, etc. on hand.

Well, that is what I was afraid of...having to use the 26". Hmmmmmmmm....

Well, if that's the case, this build might be relegated to LR only.

Question...Now that Im probaly using a 26"...thinking of going ahead and doing a stock with adj butt and cheek...any suggestions?

When re-barrel a 7mmRM Remington 700 ADL, would it be best to stay 7mmRM or better to pick another to hunt mule deer and elk with more zip. The 338LM, 338 EDGE, 300 RUM, and ... were all not invented until recently. They have more energy with better wind bucking ability for hunting than the very hard to beat 7mmRM.

Remington model 700s 338LM are factory produced. If possible to make a 338LM / 338 EDGE / 300 RUM / ... out of an older 700 ADL, what modifications to an older ADL model 700 standard action 3006 or long action 7mmRM rifle are required (have both rifles to donate if we can make them better)? Is making an older 700 Remington ADL 7mmRM into a bigger gun a good idea when plan to re-barrel it? If good to make a 7mmRM into something else, what is the most affordable big beast to change it into? Will do further searches in attempt to better understand all options, and found several threads here on SH to dig into - while none telling me what is the best to upgrade a model 700 7mmRM into. It seems Remmy 700s are very popular. So are 7mmRMs. My guess is a 7mmRM long action (possibly even a 30-06 standard action) can be made into a 338LM or 338 Edge while have not fully confirmed any specifics. Personally, I would not go over 26" inches and 24" will work just fine. I like the idea on buying a factory 7RM and selling off the parts to fund the rest but don't plan on gaining too much as there is a fair amount of stuff like that on the market.

I use my 7RM like you describe your intended use and my advice is to get a 700 BDL (or buy the parts), get a quality cut rifled barrel in #3 or 4 contour, find a Manners or MCM stock that you like and hire a quality smith from this site to put it together for you.

If your are frugal and do what you can yourself, you will end up with an excellent mule deer hunting rifle for $2K or a little less that will shoot great groups at the range as well.

Thanks for teh input. What I was thinking of doing is having SOME of the work (as in like almost anything to do with teh barrel)
I was wanting to do most of teh work myself...basically have the barrel and bolt fluted, and me do the rest.
I build Hot Rods/Race Cars for a living (own my own shop) and Ive been playing around with my recently purchased AR. I started out just assembling the lower, then after getting some rounds down it, I started to break it down. Sure, I know it's different from a BA, but the idea is the same, and is getting me familiar with how they come apart.

Is also why I bought a stock for my R700...so I can take off teh stock, and see more clearly the inner's of the BA, and planned on breaking it down as well.

So, yes, I planned on doing some of the work (basically, the assembly portion of it) Is also why I asked if there is someone locally, so if I ran into some problems, I could take it to them, ask some questions and/or drop it off with them if I cant finish it.
It might be easy. It might be hard. As much as I know about cars, there are things that I cant build either (like a home computer...HA!!!...I tried that..electronics is NOT my deal).

I found assembling the lower of my AR rather easy, and if anything, alot simpler than I was lead to believe it would be.

Thank you for the link to Mcrees..I checked it out. I cant say that is up my alley...too "tactical" looking for my taste. Im more of a traditionalist, and prefer the "hunter", or "not so tactical" look...Some of teh stocks that I like, or the "look" Im after are as follows:

B&C M40, B&C/McMillan A5, M24...along those lines.

OK well guys...thinking of going ahead and purchasing a rifle here in the next week, maybe two (have to sneak some more funds around to keep wife from noticing)


I have located a new Rem 700 7MM Rem Mag for $450 (well, a fellow Hide member sent me a link on it) and that to me is a pretty good price if I say so myself.

So, Im gonna buy it, and start from there. Granted, I know that I cant expect to move the stuff I remove quickly, or make much on it..but how I see it is, if I make ANYTHING on those parts, it's free money.
I just think it's silly to buy JUST an action for $400 (I saw a used action listed for $400 here on teh Hide just yesterday...even thugh it DID have a barrel with it, you get my point)
