Hello,

I currently have a few pounds of R19 and wanted to know if anyone has used this powder with either Hornady's 162 AMax or Berger 180 hybrid in the 7mm remington magnum. I called Alliant and they only have recipes for R17 and R22 for either of these bullets.

The powder I have used for both has been H4831sc, which has been accurate for me.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, not exactly on point, but I shoot a 26" Sendero v.1 in 7RM and was doing some long range loads with some 150s and then some H-162gr National Match and 168 SMKs in early '09.

60.5grs grs RL-19, 162gr Hornady HPBT NM, Win. LRM:

10/10 shots: Avg: 2713 fps, SD: 32.1

63.0grs RL-19, 162gr Hornady HPBT NM, Win. LRM:

7/10 shots registering: Avg: 2846, SD: 20.7

Here's some data from July '07, so hotter out here in Miami:

Five five shot groups with the 60.0grs of RL-19 and the Hornady 162gr NM:

GP1: 2669 fps, SD: 19.7

GP2: 2664 fps, SD: 11.4

GP3: 2669 fps, SD: 19.6

GP4: 2677 fps, SD: 15.8

GP5: 2675 fps, SD: 9.0

Average for the five groups: 2672 fps.

The rifle shoots pretty well with everything from the 120s up to the 168s.

IJ04,

I appreciate the link. I have reviewed the load data, it's good. I couldn't find the load range for R19 and Berger 180 hybrids. Not sure that its a good combo at all.

I have used R19 and SMK168 and it's a great combo. I got the info from sierra tech support. It consistently gives me .2-.3". I was interested in seeing how it could push the 180's.

Thx,

RG

Hi Chris,

I appreciate you sharing your information. I may give it a shot this weekend.

Which brass are you using?

RG

For 7RM, it's been FC, RP and Win.

But be careful...

RG I have been using RL22 Win Cases and 168 Bergers for a few 7MM Remmy's and a 7 STW l load for. Got a couple boxes of 180 Bergers for my 7 Mag and the STW. Gonna give'm a go in a couple weeks. I've got the Berger reloading manual and if ya like I'll forward the 180 load data to ya.

That batch was probably 10+ years old and had been fired 5-6 times, mostly neck sized.

Generally, we don't get tons of cycles out of 7RM brass and 308 Win lifespans aren't to be expected.

Out of 25 cases in that batch, half were fine, but I pitched them all.

You're absolutely right. I just shot up 8 rounds of Winchester Brass that were on their 5th load and 3 of them ended up splitting the neck/shoulder. My intention was to use them as fowlers then throw. I don't anneal so I'm in the 4-5 shots and gone crowd on the 7 Mag.

I only use Norma brass for my 7 RM, superior to the other offerings except for RWS witch is harder to get.

As for brass life, if your reloading a Belted magnum you will benefit from getting a Belted Magum Collet Resizing Die from Innovatie Technologies ( Larrywillis.com), will save you money in the long run as your cases will last longer.
A good custom FL die will also help in this regard, like Warner Tool Company, Neil Jones or JLC precision.

Have no experience with RL-19 as it's not available here, and faster burning then the powders i've used witch is VV N560, VV N160, VV N165, Norma MRP and H1000.
If your looking to run the 180s i'd certainly take a good look at Hodgdon H 1000 or Retumbo. My go to powder is the N560 but that's due to availability.
You will not get optimal results with RL 19 and the heaviest bullets.

Powermac,

I changed my mind on the R19 and the 180s. I am going to continue with H4831sc. I also have a H1000 to play with for the 180 hybrids. H4831sc gave me decent accuracy .4moa, however speed was at 2710 with .10 jump. Going back to the range to fine tune the load this weekend.

Chris,

I had case separation with my Federal brass after 3-4 loads. The brass was 10+ years old and I oversized them before getting a gauge to measure the headspace.
I currently use Norma USA brass and can tell you that's much much better than what I was using. It's so consistent!

Yes H4831 SC is a very consistent powder in my experience, I've only used it in the 284 win with 180's though.
It works fine in the 7 RM but you will again not get top velocity with it, as your velocity clearly shows, as i assume you have a barrel at least 24' or so.
My 284 drives the 180's around 2880 with N560 in my 26' 284 win, can push it past 2900 slightly but i see no need.
2710 while burning 10-15 grains more powder is
If your looking to drive the 180 as fast as they should with such a big case i'd start with,
H 1000 primarily as it's pretty temeprature stable and gives good velocities.
N 560, Norma MRP, RL 22, Retumbo, and N 165.

The VV N160, 165 will normally not give you top velocities, but is very consistent, clean burning and easy on the throat, would be my first choice if i was looking for a consistent powder with moderate velocities, it also fares well in temp sensitivity. This is generally true for the whole N 100 series.

Alliant powders are not available here, so i have no experience with them directly.
But RL 22 is very very close to Normas MRP, even produced at the same factory.
And MRP is a known performer for the 7 RM, the old MRP 2 was better with the heavier bullets though.

As for brass Norma and RWS is no doubt he best brands.
I use the Norma brass too, not Norma US though.
It's very consistent, and of good quality.
Generally have a bit more volume then Lapua brass, but the Lapua brass usually last a bit longer.
Not that Lapua is producing 7 RM brass though.
Although if i am not wrong Norma did once produce some on lisence for them, as some of the old load tables from Lapua shows.
