In the spirit of the Dasher brass thread I thought I'd put this up to help efforts for SAUM.

Currently Peterson claims to be looking into making SAUM brass. Alpha Munitions seems to be interested as well. Bertram is currently making SAUM brass as of August and looking for a US importer/distributor.

Anyone else know something I haven't listed. The Hornady 6.5 4s could be an easy neck up for my 7mm but it's Hornady. The Norma/Nosler is half decent it seems but leaves much to be desired in terms of longevity. I have some once fired RP brass that I'm about to process.

I think Peterson or Alpha are our best bets for SAUM. I figure 7mm would be ideal as the middle of the family. Easy neck down for the 6.5 guys and just a neck up for the 300 guys. I've already contacted Peterson and plan on bugging Alpha a bit.

Speaking of this, where is a source for 7 or 300 Norma brass that doesn't charge full retail. My first batch has 7 firings on it so I better get some ordered. IIRC I paid like $1.25 a piece a couple years ago.

Thanks for any help

I've been happy with Norma SAUM and WSM brass thus far. $1.25 isn't all bad for a magnum case. I'm very time limited but will still pay more for Norma and neck down to 6.5 and turn vs feeding my SAUM the 4S hornady brass.

Alpha responded. Quick I might add. Bob Danielson the president of the company said they are looking at releasing some new cartridges soon. It doesn't sound like SAUM is one of them but he said it's under consideration for future development.

I got basically the same response from Peterson. So we'll see. I think whomever is first might come to dominate the saum market, whether it's Peterson or Alpha. I hope both release SAUM cases in the next few months. We'll probably have to wait until shot '18 to find out at this point

What longevity problems have people had with the 7mm SAUM Norma brass? I am only on my 7th reloading. I have had no issues. Primer pockets still feel tight. I would think that I can get at least 3 to 5 more loadings. That puts the price around 10 cents a shot. Not a bad deal. I would expect Peterson or Alpha to come to market at an even higher price point and I would not expect primer pockets to last any longer.

Based on their current pricing of something like 6.5 creedmoor SP and or the standard .308 Win cases they're on par or beating Norma/Lapua. If 10 loadings is good, why not strive for 15 or 20 if you're annealing. Even if Norma brass was Lapua-like durability, why not welcome a US manufacturer to compete?

I believe that competition is good. It gives us better choices and the manufacturers have to work for our business. Of course we can just be happy with only one manufacturer of the brass and be subjects to arbitrary price increases or minimal to creased production.

And after all the work of neck turning, reaming flash holes and deburring them I welcome all the extra firings I can get.

I'm spoiled though, I did the same prep with my 6x47 brass and it's been 10 years/ 33 or so cycles, and most of the cases are going strong. Imagine if I did that with hornady 6.5 CM brass, I'd replaced and prepped 3-4 times, argg.

Just want to mention that on Shooter's Pro Shop .300SAUM is on sale and if you're military you can get 100 Nosler "Blems" for $125.91. If I didn't just land myself 140pieces of RP 1x fired I'd be buying.

slightly off topic, but have a bunch of folks here running 7 SAUM - but can you run a 7 SAUM out a short action (i.e. mausingfield short, defiance short) like you can a 6.5 SAUM? Heck GA build my mountain light 6,5 SAUM on a defiance ultra short (rem 7 equiv) - you have to remove the bolt slightly if you want to unload an unfired round, but its a beautiful short rifle.

MHSA built me a beautiful 6.5 SAUM light hunter on a proof barrel and mausingfield short, thinking of adding a 7 SAUM barrel to it.

I'm planning on either a 7 SAUM or 7 Sherman Short Mag in my origin with the 180 ELDM. Sherman's site shows the SAUM and SS loaded with a 180 at 2.92" which is just off lands in the SS according to him giving a bit of room in mag still. I'd probably want to work with the smith to make sure it's chambered correctly for what you want to run. I'd think the 16x class bullets would fit easier

Like said above the 16x class bullets are no issue in the short action. The 180's are the problem in the SA. I'm gathering parts for the Sherman short so I can run Berger 180 hybrids or VLD hunters, or the Warner solids.

I’m looking at having a 7 SAUM built. I’m used to loading Lapua brass in my other rifles, but know this isn’t an option for this caliber. I think the options I have in the foreseeable future are:
1). Buy Remington ammo for about $2.10 per round in new Remington brass
2). Buy Beltram brass for about $1.55 each.

I’m not at all interested in the factory Remington ammo. Which of these is the best option for getting brass for loading?

You could call Norma and ask when they are doing a run of 7 SAUM brass. If it is not too long to wait you could just put some on back order at Midsouth Shooters Supply. The Norma brass has been excellent for me.

Keep me posted. I need to buy some as well. I have been shooting factory Nosler 160 gr AB’s and not happy. I bought some H4831SC and some 162 gr ELDX and really looking forward to loading some. Anybody have any luck with this combo??

I have a defiance Alpha 11 that short action customs built mine on and I absolutely love it

Norma said they would be shipping theirs out to distributors around the end of September. I was told that brownells, midsouth and europtic (among others) should have it around the first of October. Hope this helps others also.
