7WSM or 7RSAUM - advantage?

Hey guys,

Considering a 7mm build. 7WSM or 7SAUM? Advantage of one over the other?
Brass advantage - either one. Will either one run in AI mag on a short action with VLD bullets- 168 Berger? Thanks in advance.

I went SAUM, in the hopes of a longer barrel life. But I have seen plenty do well with the WSM and BAT. I have had no problem getting bullets over 3000 including 162,175, and 180's all from a 24" barrel and H4831SC. Not sure about the feeding in an AI mag, as mine is a DTA.

The RSAUM feeds fine out of the AI .338 (non CIP) mags, my COL with the 162 Hornaday is almost 3.1" (.220 freebore) with the 180 hybrid its almost 3.15" in a short action you'll need a much shorter thoat to stay under 2.95" COL. The only short action mags I've seen available for the WSM are made by Alpha, there's a gunsmith who builds a lot of WSM short action rifles, Darrell Nagel in Kirksville MO, he modifies the AICS mags to work.

Nosler makes great brass for the RSAUM's which really helps give it an accuracy edge (my opinion only) over the WSM's.

Seems to me like the 7RSAUM is the better cartridge. It seems to **very** nearly match the ballistics of the WSM, but does so with less powder, and fits a short action better.

I've been keen on one of these for a while, but brass sure seems hard to find - in any variety, be it the 300RSAUM, the 7RSAUM, Remington or Nosler...just tough to come by.

Seems like 7-300WSM and 7-270WSM (two names for the same cartridge) were fairly popular a few years ago, but not so much anymore. Not sure why that is, because it captures most of the efficiency advantage of the RSAUM, but brass is a lot more prolific. Still doesn't fit the short action as well as the RSAUM though.

+1 for the 7 SAUM. I have stockpiled some Remington brass for mine, and hopefully as the round continues to gain popularity, quality brass will become more widely available.

When you look at the european f class championship you might want to reconsider. They finished 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th!

I have 7saum in short action that feeds great thrue magazine ! Shoots good too but it only has a sporter barrel and I have been tossing around the same options when I put a new heavier barrel on it ! Because availably of brass .Expensive nosler brass! Also swapping out bottom metal too a Seekins because his bottom metal gives a longer coal ! there is alot of options out there just don't know which way I want to go also just wish brass was more available would like to stay with 7saum ! I think most everything that's been said here is on the right track. I know the 7saum has a slight advantage when loading long bullets in an AICS mag. I didn't care about that because I'm also running mine in a DTA out of a 300 Win Mag magazine. I ended up going 7WSM because I can actually find reasonably priced brass for it. When I did my search I could get Winchester 7WSM brass from Powder Valley, but the only SUAM brass I could find was Nosler, at twice the cost of the Win brass.

Also I think the accuracy edge due to the Nosler brass that was mentioned above is non existent if you're willing to prep your Winchester brass.

Imsurprised at all the brass concerns, Norma, Nosler, and Remington all make brass that can be used in both. I have had no problems or even a little complaint about the remington brass, very uniform and good necks. I didnt even bother turning them. My local supplier has several hundred at any given time.

<span style="font-weight: bold"> Where </span>is the brass? I know those outfits make it, but over the course of the last few Months, I haven't seen any available. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places?

I bet it is just like the 260 v 6.5C v 6.5x47 L debate - no real difference out in the field.

I think the bigger issue is do you want to go Short Action or Long Action. You don't need to get these high BC going at super high velocities, as they hold on to MV better than anything in 6mm, 6.5mm and nearly everything in .30cal. I can't get used to the longer pull on the long action and I'm a lefty shooting a righty bolt gun so I went short action.

My search for brass has been part of my research for the cartridge. I currently don't have a 7RSAUM, but I fancy the cartridge and would probably set one up if there seemed to be a reliable source of fairly-priced brass.

If you can point me in the right direction, that would be great.

Turbo: I believe Midway has Nosler SAUM in stock. I don't know if the price is right or not.

Midway has 25-count boxes of Nosler for $55.

I've never messed with Nosler brass specifically, but based on the headstamps I've used (quite a few), there is "Lapua", and "the rest".

Not to say I always use Lapua - but you are certainly getting something for the extra money with it.

Is Nosler 7RSAUM brass worth the $2+/each pricetag, when RP is $1/each in small quantities, and $0.60/each in bulk???

I've never used Nosler brass.

It's not much savings, but Powder Valley has it for %52.44/25.

No, you don't really see an off center flash hole. You see a primer pocket and cartridge base that is so badly formed that it looks like the hole is off center!

This one puzzles me. It's a new piece of brass, straight from the Winchester bag. My only guess is that somehow this piece of brass stuck to the machine while forming and got jammed into the top of the next piece of brass. I don't know, just a wild guess. Not much QC/inspection that goes on this brass at Winchester, apparently.

Graf & Sons is listing Norma 300 Rem SAUM in stock. 25 ct @ $36.99, and 250 ct @ $351.41
I have heard good things about necking down this brass for the seven.

A little off topic: I decided to go with a 284 in a LA and use 59 grains of 4831sc to get me to 3003 fps with the 162 amaxes in Lapua brass. I am wondering how much powder you are using in your 7saum to get the 162's up past 3000 fps. Just curious about the efficiencies of this cartridge.

I went with a 7 SAUM in a Surgeon WSM action and I use the Alpha WSM mags. My thinking was that the shorter case of the SAUM would work better in the magazines.

I shoot the 162's and load them at about 2.9", they feed perfect and I've had them up past 3100 fps with RL-17. However, that is pretty hot, I think 3050 fps is about right, and easy to do with RL-17.

By the way, I've never had a problem getting brass. I use Remington and usually can find it at the usual places (midway, grafs, sinclair, etc.).

Ive had a FEW 7wsm's, all flavors Win, remy, savage. All built on short action recievers. All shot from AICS mags, ALL shot the same load. 180gr VLDS, 2.935, 60.5grs 4831scc....... Win brass was allways good for. It was nice knowing that ALL of my 7wsm's could shoot the same load, same velocity, same data.

After reading several threads like this one and the 7mm cartridge write up on 6br.com. I decided on the 7saum because it seemed to be the best choice considering neck length, recoil, quality brass and efficiency.
