Rifle Scopes 8-40 Base Fasteners?

Long time fan of the hide, but I've just run into a snag in my search abilities...

I'm ordering parts for my first magnum (700P in .300WM) and would like to know if you folks find the larger 8-40 fasteners for the base necessary or will the stock sized fasteners hold up to magnum recoil?

Don't futz with them unless you are having the rifle trued. The smith may need to "move" the holes as Remmy is fond of not getting them straight. The result is you run out of windage. The 6-48's will hold just fine as long as they are tight.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with 6-48 as most bases have "shoulders" that lock the base into the top of the ejection port. Although I have seen alot of misaligned remington base holes.

Use your judgement to have it done.

I think it's been noted that with the coarser thread pitch the 8-40s aren't a whole lot stronger.

The 700P is brand spakin' new, so unless the mounting holes are screwed up, looks like I'll be leaving the action "as is".
