I would like to know from actual operators, has anyone seen or heard of operators using 5.56 or .223 80 Grain SMKs, or 75 to 80 grain VLDs in combat? I know that that MK 262 Mod 0 and Mod 1 were used, and that the Army did field 1:8 twist barrels at one time in thier M16A4 DMRs. As a former highpower shooter, I had great success at 600 yards with the 80 SMKs. Thier terminal velocity is adequate. Any thoughts or observations?

Most 75 or 80 VLDs are not going to be loaded to mag length. Unlikely to be used in combat as you'll be in a single load situation.

77SMKs are good to 800. And they hit hard for a .223.

The 87PRL and 100gr OTM give excellent terminal performance in 1/7 16" barrels as well.
