One of the best parts about being an American.

They had a TV special about this and it was awesome. he was very humbled to be given the opportunity to be back in the saddle. Great show

Same here.
I am impressed by his skill but even more by his humility.
He doesn't need to impress anyone.

Re: 85 year old sniper can still do it

Not that it really matters I guess.....the man is a hero regardless, but that group seemed awfully tight for a 1000 yard shot from a .308 by an 85 year old guy.

Again, not making any negative statement about the man, he's a stud one way or the other.......

But doesn't that seem a little unreal?

Do veterans of the German military not recieve the same respect and honour?

My dad and all my uncles were WWII Vets. Anytime you run across one of those guys make sure you shake their hand as that is a group that is fast fading into the history books. Not many of them left and we need to appreciate them!

Re: 85 year old sniper can still do it

Amazing. Yet not a surprise those guys didn't have the gizmos we have today when we learn to Snipe. Just think of the rifles he used in his basic Sniper School and what about those LOW powered crappy glassed scopes. If he could hit a 1000 back then, I'd put my money on him git 70% at past 1500 with 338. All those old War Dogs amaze me. great story!!!

WWII veterans are held in good opinion by most people. But it is different from federal institutions.
The Wehrmacht must not be the base for tradition in the Bundeswehr (German armed forces), because it was used as a brutal tool of the Nazi regime. There are few soldiers which are considered as an example, like Oberst Stauffenberg who tried unsuccessfully to kill Hitler with a bomb.

In the last fifteen years the Bundeswehr has changed from a defence army against the red hordes from the east to a worldwide police force to an expedition force, still with a long and stony way to go.
In this time the perception of the soldiers in the society has canged too. Most people think very positive about our boys and girls out there, but more support is still necessary.
