87 gr Vmax for varmints

Re: 6mm - 87 grain vmax for varmints

The smaller and "wetter" the better. For exapmle, bunnies and prairie dogs. Thicker skin and less wet, no so spectacular. I shot a bunny at 500 yards and it ended up covering about 20' radius semi circle behid where it was originally hit. Prairie dogs have a similar effect.

Re: 6mm - 87 grain vmax for varmints

Hello D,

I have an old 788 in 6mm and 1t shoots awesome with 80 SBT's. That combo was my woodchuck and coyote rifle until the 204 came along. The 87's in my opinion are more suited for deer. But if they shoot accurately in your rifle, by all means use them.
Varmints really don't need alot of lead, so 65's or 70's would also be killer. no pun intended...
A friend of mine shoots 70 gr match in his 243 from chucks to deer, and swears by them. I guess it's whatever your confident in.

Good Luck,
Gam

Not too bad, 3250 MV, 300+ yard impact....

I have not trouble killing rodents.
A quickshock 22LR will often keep a full sized prairie dog or rock chuck from reaching their holes.

The problem is hitting them at long range. A .223 35 gr Vmax 3500 fps will almost always hit a ground squirrel at 180 yards.

I had a 6mmBR reamer made to fit an 87 gr Vmax bullet.
A 10" twist will stabilize that bullet.
They shoot well in 8" twist barrels.

Re: 87 gr Vmax for varmints

I've got a 6 X 284 that I was shooting 105 A-maxes at 3270 fps. They would not blow up the groundhogs, just punch thru them like a deer.
I switched to 87 V-maxes at 3580 fps. I was told that I should get the splat factor with my set up. Well I shot several groundhogs from 125 yards out to 500+ and not one exit wound.
The last groundhog I shot this year was the 125 yard shot. I would have bet money that there was gunna be some carnage, chunks a flyin'. All I got was a DRT critter with an entrance hole but not exit. I was like WTF?
Anyhow, my friend is happy with the performance of the 87 V-maxes because they don't exit and dump all of the energy on the spot.

That's my experience with 87 gr V-maxes.
