Think this rifle is finally finished, except the barreled action may get re-sprayed in HK Black...Im not sold on the Flat Service Brown.

Started its life as a regular old 110BA. First thing it got was the Accu-shot picatinny rail for the Atlas. That came from the Anshutz sliding adapter kit they sell, the rail was the perfect length to drill/tap it into the small space in the front of the stock.

A Murphy Precision 40moa SS base was installed (retarded BA rail never left the box), the base was glass bedded to the action.

The Accu-Stock wings were milled out of the stock in favor of a proper Devcon glass bed job.

The factory barrel was giving me major problems with accuracy, best I could find was 3" @ 100yds before I gave up and ordered a Shilen Stainless Match 1-10tw barrel for it. Only waited about 18 of the 24 weeks they originally quoted me. As soon as I got the barrel it got some 3/4-24 muzzle threads for the can.

While the BA was apart, the action face was trued, bolt face trued, and lugs lapped. I also polished the ejector because it was leaving some nasty marks on the brass. Barrel was headspaced onto a PTG go gauge.

Next thing was a paintjob. Started with just the barreled action in flat service brown KG, didnt like it with the black stock so shot all the metal components of the stock with flat dark earth. Looks better, but still think I may re-shoot the barrel in HK Black.

I fired a few rounds through my old YHM 338 Phantom, can sounds excellent but its a tad heavy, and Im not sold on the greatest accuracy from the QD mount. Shot sub .5moa at 180yds without any load development.

Now the Thunderbeast 338BA arrived today...much better! 23.5oz without the brake, 27.5 with it compared to 42oz for the Phantom. Turned about .020 off the brake and it was timed in one shot. Just had to bore a few threads out of the end as my muzzle threads were a tad long.

Ill update tomorrow when I get a chance to shoot it and see how it does.

All can say is wow! My ba has been spot on since day one? Today we werw banging steel out to a mile. Once dialed in even 1st time shooters were hitting first shot ever shot! My daughter hit the target every time she shot at the 18"x24" target!

Good luck with your new stick

My next project for it is coming up with an adapter a better recoil pad. They may as well have put a piece of steel on there for a recoil pad. The 338 has very little recoil with the can or brake, but its still torture on the shoulder with that rock hard rubber pad.

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

Shoots MUCH better than the factory barrel now. Best I could get out of it before was about 2.5" @ 100yds, now she shoots ragged groups at 100yd. I think it will tighten up even more at 300+ with the 300gn bullets Im shooting.

Both the Scenars and Berger Hybrids shot well with 91.5gn of H1000.

On a side note, the TBAC 338BA is unbelievable. I thought the gun sounded pretty good before with the YHM on it, now I swear the gun is quieter than my 308/30P-1 combo! I had to shoot one with just the brake to remind myself how loud the gun actually is haha.

Do you really? Or are you justifying it to yourself since you can't own a suppressor? ;-)

lol I have been keeping my eyes open for ya but you are too qualified for the circles I run in. Fuck it just pack your shit and figure out the job shit when ya get here. Actually you might want to wait till about the end of May so you won't have to deal with the snow and cold and then plus it will be just about prime p doggin season.

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

Guess it wasnt quite finished...

Shot out to distance over the weekend finally, was shooting awesome! Rang the 12x12 steel at 1650 a few times, and was consistently ringing the 1165 target with it.

What I found was my Razor is still 11 mils from the bottom with 100yd zero. This left me with 25 mils up, which ONLY gets me to 1950 or so. I went ahead and had Murphy Precision make me a 65moa base, and make it 1/4" taller than his normal bases. This should give me around 32mils of up travel now which will get me to around 2200 without holding.

The reason for the taller base is that with 25 dialed the bottom part of the sight picture was getting quite blurred from the can/mirage cover, and if it was hot at all I was just seeing mirage.

Also. Even though with the brake or can this 338 recoils like a 308, anyone who has a Magpul PRS stock can probably attest that even a 22lr with this stock would suck to shoot. The recoil pad might as well be a piece of steel its so hard. Originally I just used a slip on limbsaver pad, but that was tacky.

Todays project was an adapter plate to put a decelerator pad on it. I may draw something up to be machined that would be more of a drop in solution, this one required modifying the aluminum piece that is on there now.

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

The recoil pad looks pretty damn good man. Let me know when you get a drop in type sloution figured out. I would be interested in something like that. Also if you don't want that old base I'll take it off your hands. PM me if you want to get rid of it.

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

That was part of my requirement for the pad was for it to be higher as well. I feel that is really why the prs pad hurts so badly on this gun is you only get about 1" of contact with your shoulder laying prone.

Id like to machine a part that will replace the pad adapter that comes on the gun. All the user would have to do is drive out that rollpin and slap this new piece on allowing you to bolt on a good pad.

Could you sell a few prototypes to some members on the hide?

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

Very Nice work! I'm in the process of prepping mine for Duracoat/Duraheat. What did you do for prep work on the stock pieces and the action/barrel pieces? I'm considering aluminum oxide blast, but would be interested in your method/results before I proceed. Thanks in advance!

I guess I should be happy overlapping the same hole then.

That is some sweet work there....love it

Re: A better Savage 110BA 338LM

It's amazing how some of these shoot great and some are terrible. Glad I got a good one (110FCP HS precision). I also went with a Murphy Precision base on mine. The aluminum Savage base was getting torn up from recoil.

I really like how your rifle looks without the rail.
