So up until recently I had a 98K that still had the Nazi proofs on it but I could never get it to shoot right. I adjusted the rear sight on it but it would still shoot about 4" left at 50 yards so I figured the bore was shot or something was wrong so I sold it.

Now I really miss it and am considering getting another one but my Mauser-Fu is very weak.

If you want a great shooter, would you buy a Mitchel's Mauser or look somewhere else?

Also, if I can find a used one with the bore shot out, who can rebarrel it?

I was toying with trying to just find a 98K action only and having one barreled in .308 just to have one to shoot for fun.

you can rebarrel the k98,of course(Israeli Army have employed rebarreled k98s in .308,and even Parker-Hale has produced a beautiful .308 sniper rifle reworking k98 actions)_Lothar Walther,Germany, produces today excellent barrels for k98k,Gewehr 98,etc.,but really I think you can't have problems to find good barrel makers and gunsmiths in U.S.A._Jerry Kuhnhausen wrote a really useful book: "The Mauser M91 through M98 Bolt Actions,a Shop Manual" VSP Publishers,Box 887,Mc Call,ID 83638_ please, buy it before to buy your next Mauser ,because K98k is not just a rifle : it's THE rifle _ good luck !

Good all-matching 98k's are getting harder to find over here. But there are a lot of knackered old and mis-matched bitsa rifles about!

I've heard some pretty bad things about Mitchells so personally would be very wary about them .

I've got a Miltech Arms 98k and another one on order. Ed Silva does a great job of sourcing genuine rifles and restoring them to "as issued" condition.

My smith has just bought an ex-Norwegian Mauser 98k that was rebarrelled in 7.62 Nato by the Norwegians - it shoots pretty well.

Here's my Miltech 98k - it's an all matching byf41 with an ex-Luftwaffe walnut stock with correct WaA655 markings.

If I were going to get a rebuilt/restored K98 I`d go with Miltech over Mitchell`s Mausers.

I just redid this Duv41. It was a complete mismatch gun. Barrel was totally junk. I still have to get the gun refinished/blued. The new barrel is a .30cal. Chambered in 7.5x58mm which is a 8x57 mauser case necked down to .30cal. 5R rifling and 1-11.25 twist.

Re: A couple of Mauser 98K questions for you gents

Mitchells has a reputation for taking capture rifles and making them appear authentic. That being said I do have one of theirs and with the way it shoots I'm not worried about the actual history of this one "un-issued nazi proofed rifle". If buying for a collection, stay away from them. Collectors will not take you seriously if you bring them up. If your looking for a decent shooter, may get lucky even though will be buying sight unseen. I got lucky with mine, know many many others that did not. They basically bought a starting point for a build

We can do it as well. My rifle pictured we duplicated the contour of the 98k. Done it a bunch of times.

My 98K is a Russian Capture that hasnt had the dirty bird peened out and its a tack driver, they run arround $300 out in these parts. As with any surplus gun I would check the barrel out before the externals, passed on quite a few guns cause the barrels were worn out. If you want one in 308 I personaly would hunt for one the israelis converted, however they will be rather hard to find IMO.

Re: A couple of Mauser 98K questions for you gents

I think, for obvious reasons, it's not so easy to find a not well-worn israeli k98: in their days, for sure they never spared them_(Among others,I shoot without remorse a CZ post-war assembled K98K,virtually brand new, branded TAPCO,Florida on the barrel...)_ I am really very pleased about the answer of a top-notch U.S.barrel maker, even if,thanks to our regulations and the average level of our gunsmiths, can be very difficult we can,one day, shoot or simply see a Bartlein-barreled K98k here, in italy_
