I am kinda new to this, have a cheap rig and every once in a while I get to shoot at a ~1200 yard range and need a basic starting point here, we shoot at F class type paper targets both at 300 and 600 yards, metal plates at 600, 800 yards and then there are metal silhouettes at longer distances, not even thinking about those now.
Once I get on paper, sometimes this takes a while I can crawl my way to the 10 spot, only tried once a few rounds at the 10" plates at 600 & 800 yards, got close but close don't count.
I am not asking for a "free" ballistic table, I know it is best if I work that out myself, just a starting point here, ammo is getting pricier and hard to find. I ask the guys at the range but then I get half a dozen suggestions!
I got a Remington 700 SPS Varminter in 308, 26" barrel, 1-12 twist, it seems to like the Black Hills 308 168gr HPBT ammo and the Federal Match 175 gr. Scope is a Nikon 4-12x 50mm, Haris 6-9" bipod, EGW scope mount and no brand, ebay, cheap, cheap medium height 30mm rings with 1" shims I have to upgrade. (suggestions?)
So if I zero the rifle at 100 yards, what would be good starting points elevation wise for 300, 600 and 800 yards?
Just want to get on paper so I can work it out from there!
Then there's a formula for windage correction, something along the lines at using the flag as the indicator on a compass?
JIC this is my rifle, in 308.
