I'm a new SH member and am looking for some help. Currently I'm trying to build a long range ar15. My goal is sub 10 inch groups at 800. Currently I have a stag lower with timney trigger group, stag upper with 24" 1 in 8 twist very heavy bull barrel and larue lbr (I think that's what the cantilever qd-ish mounts are called) 30mm mount with a osprey industries. This is the problem...scope is a no name brand that I got for almost nothing and it is a complete POS. So I need help figuring out what scope to get. Here are the "requirements" I have:

<$1200
30 mm tube
I like ffp so I'd like to stick with that
High mag like around 20x or so
Variable mag

I spent a fair amount of time behind the crosshairs I'm just not all that up on the latest gear.

Thanks in advance and let the schooling begin!

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

Well for a couple hundred more than your budget you can get a used nightforce nxs in the for sale section here and be good to go. You already spent alot of money on the rifle, might at well get a good scope, but if your set on not spending any more than your budget the Sightron S3's and the Vortex PST's are really nice for the money.

He's not going to get FFP and 20X with a Nightforce.

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

Forgot to mention you can probably get a 3-18X42 IOR for that price used. It's a 35mm tube but they often come with rings if thats the reason why you want to stick to the 30mm tube.

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

this is a great scope for what you're trying to do. only 2 left in stock at that price. Shop around at Liberty Optics, SWFA, MidwayUSA, CS Tactical, EuroOptics and some others and see if they can beat the price.

Bushnell 30mm Tube Elite 4200 Illuminated Mil-dot First Focal Plane Riflescope (6-24x50, Matte)

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

As far as I know, the only four scopes that really meet your criteria are:

Falcon 5.5-25
Weaver 4-20
and the two aforementioned: PST and Bushnell

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

If you're military or LE, Leupold is the way to go in that price range. If not you can still find decent deals on Mark 4's if you look a bit. Watch the classifieds on here and you may find something very nice for cheap.

I just thought I would through out the 3-15x50 NXS as a FFP choice, I would rather have really nice glass with lower mag than really shitty glass with high mag ya kno, but I'm not sure why anyone would want a high powered scope in FFP? It makes the reticle almost useless to see at the lower settings.

+1 to this guy

Well, you can't have caviar on a corn flakes budget

but you can get some good stuff, you just might need to re-evaluate your needs.
For 1200 bucks you can get a nicely equipped ST-10, you won't have to worry about the accuracy of the reticule at any given magnification, and your getting a great piece of glass. I'd much rather have a great 10x scope than a middle of the road 5-20 variable. Your gun, your money your choice.

You've obviously never had an S&B 5-25.

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

I can see and plot .308 boolet holes in paper at 500 yards with the Schmidt. My buddies IOR at 17x cannot. It used to belong to Keith ^^^^^

To be fair, dialing down the Schmidt to appx. 17x, still can see them. At 25x, it is as if it is a spotting scope....

Re: A little help from all ye snipers

I would get your name on a PST 6-24 mil mil FFP (900$, call cameralandny or libertyoptics) or check out the weaver FFP 3.5-15. I have a bushnell 3-12 and it is okay but a couple things about it (tight eyeball, poor picture at max) kind of bug me. PST has more features and I hear the eyeball is more forgiving, weaver supposedly has slightly better glass and is cheaper. Either way is a win over the bushnell.
