I was at a long range shoot yesterday where there were a handful of gun manufacturers. One of them was knights armament. I was talking to them about the most accurate bullets to use in an AR 10. I mentioned that I use A-max bullets. They went on and on about how I should never use A-max in a semi auto because the action breaks the tips off all the time. They said they get stuck in the barrel and in the lower receiver. One guy claimed that they found 23 in a lower. I've shot 300 through my DPMS and have yet to find a tip anywhere.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience with tips coming off???

Shoot the 168 amax through my GAP10 and never had any tip problems.

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

Knights is most likely coming at it from a military/LEO standpoint. For the paper puncher/steel bangers/hunter it would never be an issue (your ass is not on the line) as opposed to those on a two way range (Murphy's Law always shows face).

Just my 2 cents.

I've never had an issues with any of my semi's and AMAX's.

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

The Hornady guys I talked to said most semi-auto shooters prefer the A-Max to the BTHP. They said something about the tips are more consistent, feed better, and work in magazines better than their Match BTHP.

The other funny thing is they turned to the guys at McMillan and asked if they had heard of these problems and they said " oh yeah, it's a bad combination."

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

I've shot thousands of A-Max and V-Max bullets thru AR-10 and AR-15 and never noticed any tips coming off. With a good feed ramp it should'nt be a problem

Most guys I've talked to say as long as it's just the tip its fine...

I loved the link to the "best bull shizzle..." that was some pretty funny stuff. I think I've met most of those people.

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

I run ballistic tip/amax/vmax type bullets almost exclusively in my ARs. I've had exactly one tip break in thousands of rounds. That was after it had been ejected and rechambered several times. I went ahead and shot it on paper at 100 yards and it shot just like it should have.

That bullet got all of the abuse because I wanted to see when the tip would fail since I load and unload rifles when I get setup to hunt. I think it broke on the sixth chambering, which is pretty good in my book.

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

The only broken one's I've seen is in the bullet box. And I've only seen a few. Never seen an issue in a AR platform. They will get a scratch or ding if you drop them or if they hang up on the feed ramp. But I've never seen an issue.

Re: A-Max bullet tips breaking off???

Same as Chad. I've run 500+ thru my bolt guns with no problem, but have seen maybe 2 broken in the box when I open them from shipping. I even run courses of fire with 10 loose rounds in my ACU pocket.... Never had an issue.

I do know that the A-Max is a longer bullet in 223 than the BTHP and when seated to mag length, the ogive makes it imposisible to get a good crimp, but don't think that is a problem in 308. I'll find out soon.... Got an MA-Ten on the way
