Sidearms & Scatterguns A sniper's "best" side-arm/weapon.

On a marginally serious note, I like how it's always the assumption that a sniper's sidearm is something large and cumbersome that can be called upon for 100+ yard engagements...you know if the sniper rifle goes down kinda thing. It's never something simple or practical like say a Glock 19 that would be easy to carry/compact yet a fully capable, duty-grade pistol. I guess that's not nearly as fun as picturing an operator strapping a MK23 boat anchor to one's thigh....

What type of side-arm/weapon do you think a sniper would use?

This is just a trivial thread, not a serious thread. I just want you guys to imagine a sniper's best sidearm.

I would think that it would be a MK23, heavy and extremely accurate with 12 rounds of .45/suppressible. It's great at 50-75 yards, which is pretty nice as a side arm. I heard navy seals used them as primary weapons ("crew served pistol" ha). Unreasonably heavy though, weighing at 5 pounds with a suppressor and LAM, might be better to stick with an automatic sub-gun.

What do you guys think?

You bring the side arm, I'll bring como for arty or tac-air.
If I have let myself get to the point I need a pistol,... my fieldcraft an tactics now sucks so bad, I should have not been there in the first place.

Not true.

I was in several places where you had to have a weapon with you all the time (South East Asia).

Let me assure you its a lot easier to go through a chow line with a 1911a1 then an M-60.

I picked new instead of newbie. Maybe using the word sniper was obviously a stupid idea...considering the amount of "mall ninja" feel to it. I agree with your point, next time I won't think of a bullcrap stupid name.

I watched he Best Sniper completion on the military channel, don't know if it was staged like reality TV or not, but in one scene the sniper and his spotter had to use pistols, they were not that impressive with handguns. I'm no expert, except in my own house, but I don't think snipers spend a lot of time training with pistols. Like others have mentioned these guys are a weapon for a special purpose, short range handgun work is not their forte. Or I may be completely wrong.
