A solution to my Pit Problem

I have a solution because you guys are out of control with the political hatred crap

You don;t realize not controlling your first will cost your second and I have saved a few of you from yourself a couple of times.

So moving forward, new year coming up, new ideas, especially for my political dilemma

I have a feeling we are going to need this voice out there, but unfortunately a lot of you don’t speak for a lot of us, you’re not smart enough to know threats and stupidity can get you in trouble today.

So my solutions, I will create Political Posts, those topics will be open for X amount of time and you can post in them like the bearpit anything you want but we’ll limit the damage you all are doing by talking shit too much

For controversy I think I am creating topic to play with,

The Pit Presides

The Pit Presides topics will focus your squirrel brains on specific things, let you rant and rave and then we can start over. I foresee some epic threads in length

Think about it, I don’t want to crush you all, I want you to play and vent, but you have to do it right

Have some requirement like post count or reaction score before your even able to see the door.

Similar to the LEO or admin section.

If the problem is public view why not just make it private?

containing is just another word for protection (which should be paramount in ones business)
in the world of screen shots and emails, information lives on forever
the last thing needed is ransomware or alike because someone was offended

i do agree with certain threads having a lifetime before they are deleted forever

i also think there should be a lock on threads that have are X months or years old
equipment and techniques are advancing at a pace that a 4 year old post/thread is probably useless

Let me start by saying that this is not a recommendation as I have know idea how TF to code anything- not to mention that this isn't my house. However, I've thought about the pit for a while. I would have access to the pit, maggies, and the PX all tied to the user post count. But, I'd go a step further. If the % of posts by a user in the pit + maggies + the PX were greater than 50% of that user's total posts, that user would be barred access to those parts of the site until the % fell below 50% + some non-trivial buffer amount. And, I would impose a minimum character limit on posts to limit the "Bump" in the "informational" parts of the site. Add in a bit of judicious modding outside of those areas and some draconian measures for "pollinating" the informational areas and I think the worst offenders would weed themselves out. That said, I've been a member here or a few years now and, if enacted, I believe that my "solution" would see me barred from the pit for a while.

I've seen many people ( possibly sometimes even myself ) use bitter hyperbole in a way that an overzealous bureaucrat might be able to twist to interperate as a threat of violence.

Sad times indeed. But none of us want to see the entire membership end up on some kind of watch list, if we are not all ready.

Most thread titles are decent at explaining at what's contained therein.
Keep scrolling and ignore. There are also a number of tools at your disposal to ignore users and to subscribe or not to threads and sections.
Dig around in your settings and see what's there. You might find something useful. Then again, perhaps not.

Here is a suggestion that worked miracles on another forum I am on

Have a sub forum under the bear pit called politics
Make people submit a request to gain access to that sub forum (the other place used a PM to a mod as the request)
then
Hire a second much much more fierce ban cat
and ban people from the political sub forum with 1 warning
if they then continue to be dumb in other parts of the site, ban them from the site altogether

You will eventually know who and who not to allow to talk politics
I also like the suggestion of not allowing new members into the politics forum, make em get 100 or 200 posts first.

Only recommend as I have seen it work. Yes it is more work for you and the mod team.

I belong to a forum that requires you to login every visit - just so read any of it, let alone post. None of the bots can get in to catalog any of it for a search engine. Only registered users can see it.

The reality is:
(1) the Pit brings a lot of people to the site. You have the metrics, but most of the "trending" threads are from the Pit;
(2) there is often a fine line between posts that are entertaining and those that cast us all in a bad light;
(3) babysitting all the threads is unmanageable; and
(4) the dumbasses are going to be dumbasses wherever they are and however they manage to post.

The only solution is to ban the full-time dumbasses. There are only a handful of them. Everyone knows who they are. Although it will certainly reduce the entertainment value and some traffic, it will be less of a headache for the mods and HMFIC.

For the most part... I agree.

I also agree with @Jrb572 Typically I stay 'out of the pit'... but the sheer volume of crap from there that surfaces in the 'New Posts' feed gets old, really quickly.

It's a similar issue on other forums... I don't log in to see people's off-topic requests for prayers for their ailing relative, or their dog, or what the fuck ever. Here it's never-ending tin-foil hat rants and $hit talk. Having an 'off' button for that stuff would be really nice, without having to forego the convenience of using the 'New Posts' feed.

I don't necessarily see the issue being Controversial opinions more than the its those opinions on display for all public to see and as part of SH public image which is part of gun cultures public image. I wholeheartedly agree we should portray a positive image, for our own interests.

Controversial opinions are still valid and while most of us may keep it to our selves, I feel its a disservice to the bigger picture. We can call out the extremists and police our own without public seeing our dirty laundry. Controversial topics need a space to be challenged and discussed. Those discussion may be to harsh for snowflakes in general population. Doesn't mean they shouldn't happen.

Solve for the public access not for censoring opinions.

For me its a no Brainer, make the pit private and take it off the public stage.

With all the crap you and your mods endure @lowlight, I am all for this site becoming a ‘pay to play’ site.
I realize wanting to keep it free is the way you want to keep it, and I and many others very much appreciate that, but a yearly fee to be a member would certainly route out the deplorables and those looking to take advantage.
At the very least, all these different forums that you need to babysit should be pay to play, like sales, bear pit or this new forum your coming up with.
I for one would be happy to pay for the info, access to merchandise, knowledge, reviews etc that this site provides.

There is a difference between 'discussion of controversial subjects' and posting stuff that is overtly fucked up and has no redeeming value.

I'm not trying to stir the pot and certainly don't want us to lose our priviledges to express our thoughts openly in a responsible way. All I'm saying is that we are able see a politically themed thread title and we have the ability to not enter the thread through personal choice. There are already so many sub-forums on the hide that already address any type of shooting related discussion.
