AAC BLACKOUT rifle - should we do .260 Rem?

Yeah, why? Less weight, same accuracy, more surface for cooling. Last is not really needed on a bolt action but all in all the concept is great, isn´t it? Correct me if I´m wrong, please...

Re: AAC BLACKOUT rifle - should we do .260 Rem?

The cooling is not significantly different. It may be the same accuracy, I am not sure. I would need to shoot 30 barrels with 50 rounds each, remove them, flute them, and shoot them all again to find out. One thing is for sure - it ain't gonna make a barrel shoot better.

I minimize weight by optimizing stiffness through the way the barrel is tapered using finite element analysis. The best example of poor barrel design is the Govt M16/M4 profile. It is thin and then gets thicker.

Re: AAC BLACKOUT rifle - should we do .260 Rem?

Stress relief is important after fluting just like it is after drilling, rifling, profiling, etc. Properly stress relieve a barrel when it needs it & you have no concerns, fluted or not.

Damn everybody is saying 260 this and that. I don't give a crap abt a 260. I just want to know how the rifle shoots from the box.Is there anybody that can tell us who want to know?. MM

I am going to call BS on that.

Besides, the AAC 260 barrels are nitrided and that has about 60% more life than a chrome-lined barrel in 5.56mm - so it should do a lot for barrel life in a bolt action.

I have never heard of or noticed any disadvantage in accuracy on fluted barrels. Also, many competetive shooters, especially in europe use them on highly accurate custom builds, with good results.

I competely agree, I hate that M4/M16 barrel profile. It horribly affects accuracy and stiffness and does not even save alot of weight. A complete fail.

+1 I can't afford a full custom rig, but if you can meet or beat the $1500 MSRP I think I can pull that together (plus the $$$ for the mount and optics, etc). Just a barreled action or cheapo stock if that will keep the costs down.

Re: AAC BLACKOUT rifle - should we do .260 Rem?

wow, I just read this whole thread. About half way thru I was really exited for remington. Making break through move to promote business to the target/tactical community by introducing the a rifle that make sense. A FAST TWIST .260!! In the end, after the tease, no rifle.

All rem has to do is make the SPS varmint, in .260(8 twist), 5R barrel, @ 24". End of story..... Also do the same with the .223, and .243.

me personally, don't care for remington these days. Sold their soul for money. Now make mass lines of crap for ultimate profit. quality control sucks. But worst is buying out good companies like marlin and tuning their fine guns into crap. I saw a new Model 39a the other day and wanted to puke.

still if rem made a .260 with a 5r bbl. I'd really consider buying if the price was right.

rsilvers... Do you put any rounds down the tube before you nitride it? Are you doing a liquid salt bath process, a gas process, or a plasma process?
