I had until very recently never shot past 300yrds. I wouldn't call my shots at 300 a nice group either. I figured it'd be a while before I ever saw a 1000yrd target I would be confident enough to hit.
After some thought and extensive research here and elsewhere on the web, I ponied up and snagged a 3 day course from a well respected instructor (Ed Shell -Central Virginia Tactical <--Awesome!!). The area in and surrounding Louisa, Va will make you want to quit your job and move there. Absolutely beautiful area.

The first day we covered theory, basics, and 'advanced' theory of ballistics, much was a review of long established basic theory, but an equal amount was new and or different information than I previously had rattling around in my dome. I would attribute my following accuracy directly to much of what he taught us on Day 1. Some tweaking and checking of the weapon systems was also done to minimize issues in the field. He intelligently answered a myriad of questions from myself and my shooting partner Jason.
We spent about 15min zeroing at 100yrds. Following that after setting up MUCH further out, the method of manually ranging all of our targets was a frustrating but extremely gratifying experience (When you got it right) and again just re-enforced faith in our machines and some basic math. Estimation must completely leave your head and your vocabulary. Our first real engagement was at 580 yrds. It was hit after hit after hit all day on targets from 580 out. By the end of the day we were see-sawing between 950-1050yrd with similar results. After day one my confidence in my abilities and my weapon was soaring and still is. The next day 1250yrds was our main play toy, and was engaged consistently by both shooters.
Ed had and maintained a much higher confidence in my abilities than I did and helped re-enforce it in myself. The evidence is on steel. I'll be going back to Ed for more as soon as I can swing it.
