Hunting & Fishing About to Book

I'm a native So Floridian and never really had the opportunity to hunt, nor did I know anyone who hunted growing up. It just wasn't something that many people do there. I had a couple of friends who had gone boar hunting in the Everglades, but nothing more than that.

But since I've moved to the Bluegrass I've realized that the logical destination of all this shooting I do is hunting. It has consequences in missing (no trophy or meat), and the rewards seem great. So I've decided to go ahead and book myself a hunt for the 2011 season.

I've never hunted anything larger than squirrels and have never been invited on a deer hunt here in KY, so I wanted to go with a guide. Someone I could watch and learn how to do things ethically and safely, then use those newly acquired skills and knowledge on my own.

But I wanted also to use this opportunity to go on a vacation. Somewhere different. Somewhere I CAN'T go whenever I want. So I've chosen Wyoming.

And in order to maximize my time in the field, I've decided on a combo pronghorn/deer hunt.

I have a very short list of lodges (with one in particular that I have my eye on - especially after having spoken to the outfitter today) but I'd like to ask for some recommendations of lodges that will provide the whole package (lodging, food, guide, transport).

Again, I'm looking to do a pronghorn/deer combo hunt.

Thanks.

Re: About to Book

As a guide I always gave a full disclosure so the client knew any problems that may or may not have been my fault.

Asking success rates and trophy success rate always seem to be the first thing a client wants to know. While this may be important there are most important things about a guide than success rate.

Ask for a list of past clients that you may contact and ask if they will give you complaints too. Contacting these clients is a good way to know about the guide. When I sent a package I always included these contacts and said please contact them all before deciding and with my registration there was question asking each client if they can be contacted by future clients. One of my clients ran a blog and I grateful to guide him 2 times.

Contact local fish and game and ask for a report on the guide. FG should know if or how many complaints against the guide there are. Not all warrant a bad guide though but this can give you more info.

Outside of that, not much help unless you go to Alaska.

Good luck!
