Comes with a Bell and Carlson stock. The barrel is free floated, fluted, with recessed target crown and cold hammer forged, stainless steel. Winchester gives a quasi 1 MOA or less guarantee (with good optics and ammo). Otherwise, comes with the MOA trigger (meh). Barrel is 1/12 twist.

Also, of course, the mauser action (controlled feed) and 3 position safety.

Thoughts?

Plan would be to shoot out the barrel, rinse and repeat if everything works out.

Some info on what type of shooting you plan to do, what ranges, etc would help. Not saying the rifle you picked is a bad stick, but there are a lot of options and price points out there. Other things to consider are the budget that will remain for optics - that all depends on the type/range question.

The rifle is pretty much intended for all around 308 use. I will likely add a 243 or 7mm-08 in the near future. So it will be target punching, hunting and SHTF zombie, etc.

My plan is to get a NF for it, or possibly a loopy.

I handled one of the new 308 Extreme weather versions, and it looked nice. What's not to like about a M70 with the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. It should be a good rifle.

I could be wrong here but wouldn't that twist rate be a little much if going with a heavier grain round? I definately wouldn't run hot loads in that one.

While the quoted post and the one preceding it are true, which bullet you plan on shooting determines whether the statements are relevant or not.

My .308 has a 1:12" twist and it shoots 155gr Scenars and 175gr SMKs with great accuracy. If you want to shoot the 210gr SMKs then that will probably not work so great but I doubt the OP is planning on using those projectiles.

As for the rifle itself I believe there are better choices but if the price is right it will get the job done.

While it is a very good choice for a stock, basic, simple .308. I give you from 10 to 12 months until you are posting inquiries on custom builds for a 1/2 MOA gun.

If you do intend on upgrading, a 700 has exponentially more aftermarket parts. But if you are going to stick with keeping it in a simple, a 70 will be fine.

That being said, if you are going stock, I would also look at the Sako's Finnlite

How much are you paying for it?

There's a Tikka T3 chambered for 708 in the firearms for sale section for $610.I'm not that enthused with Savages,M70's,M700's anymore after shooting and cycling the actions of the Tikkas'.Slick as can be.From what I've read about them in range reports and shooting a couple,I'm very impressed.

If I were going to build an affordable custom again I'd start with a Tikka.

Haha, yeah: not interested in 210... mainly looking at 150-168, perhaps 175. I'll reload some 168 in various brands, same for 175 and see what it likes best.

While a 12" is far more versatile than the Windowlickers would give credit,10" remains my favorite .30cal twist rate.

All bullets that you've mentioned,will be handled well in a 12".

Yes, I used to shoot some older Tikka's (see m27, m39) but if I am going modern bolt then I'd rather stick with a controlled feed system. Obviously this does not dictate that one exclusively choose amongst M70's, but I like their offerings.

I'm not closed to other controlled feed systems, CZ, Sako, Rem 798, etc.

But I have been impressed with the new production FNed Winchesters at the price point (only handled about 8-10 thus far, but all of them were very smooth and well made). If one went Sako, you're getting yourself into some fantastic hardware but you're paying a steep price not only for it but also for further aftermarket support. Granted the M70, nor any other platform, has the aftermarket support of the m700 but my pre-requisites have precluded most 700s and Tikka.

If I was not self-mandating controlled feed, I'd probably start and end with Tikka (possibly a 700).

Well, if it follows the pattern of my non-milsurps (particularly AR's), I'll get it with the intentions of keeping it "mostly" stock. But within a year it will have a better trigger, ionbond/robar finish, etc. At least that's my prediction on this.

I understand the aftermarket support on the 700... but controlled feed is where my mind is at.

I haven't ruled out Sako, but I think for the price point the new M70 extreme weather (typically sold around mid 800s) is a great deal.

Fn makes a good rifle. Aftermarket stuff is a moot point. There is plenty of support and upgrades for the m70 platform. Dbm? Cdi. Barrels? Every where. Bases? Just about same. Stocks? Take your pick. Its moot. Go with what you want.

To the OP,
For a sporter weight, all around use .308, I would rather have that M70 than <span style="font-style: italic">any</span>Remington M700 made. I have an old stainless "Classic" M70 in .308 that has been a great rifle over the years, and still does its job just fine. I also have a SAKO 85 stainless .260 that I love, but there is even less aftermarket support for it....to the point that you have very few options for scope mounting. Very frustrating.

You might also look at some of the FN M70's floating around out there....good deals are to be had.

You ask to be lead to a "buy" or "not to buy" decision.As chrisboc said,buy it.I expect,like some of us,you want it but don't know if you want to spend the money.If you get it,you'll make more money,or you'll die ,in which case it won't matter.If you get it,you'll know if you like it or not.You just can't loose.I myself am a Winny slut and part of that is the CRF.Not because it's better but because of the illusion of smoothness.It just click clacks nicer than most others.As to whether CRF extracts more positively than any other type?I have no clue.What I do know,is that the nice big claw requires a nice big cut in the chamber mouth,that on more than one occasion,has acted like a feed ramp and when feeding off of the left side of the mag,"feeds" the cartridge away from the chamber.Hardly a warm and fuzzy when it comes to bad ass game.No worries though as I am sure I am th only person to have ever experienced this phenomenom.

If you want a good rifle that shoots. think about having one built. sometimes you can find a youth rifle new that is reasonable priced. I've seen M700 youth rifles for 425.00 new, take that to a gunsmith have it put into a stock (bedded) of your choice with a cheap custom barrel and you will 900 into a real shooter. or buy a used Model 700 in the swap sheet somewhere an do the same thing. if you want to shoot .308 look for a short action in 22-250,243,260,7mm08 and of course 308 and you are good to go. a long action in 270,280 and 30-06 will do the same thing as they all have the same bolt face. when looking at a used gun pull the bolt when looking at the bolt face check the lugs not in the front but on the back side of the lugs for on each side. you will see shiny metal, if it looks equal on each lug you will have a good shooter. don't get all caught up in this crap with the blueprinted actions. A good cheap custom barrel and a bedded action will shoot 1/2 easy at 100 yrds. you will need a reamer cut for the bullet you want to shoot. while you are at it have it cut you a set of dies for loading. or just tell your smith I want to shoot a 155 grn .308 or a 175 grn .308 or you plan on shooting fed GM 168s etc. they will cut a chamber that best fits your needs..

Trust me, save the big money custom actions when reach HI Master and you can call your shots at 600 and beyond. at that point your buying points to keep your edge mentally.
