Any reason to use one on a rimfire besides a place to rest your hand?

Nope. I just wanted one to place my hand on so I'm not shifting my POI by touching the barrel. I want a fully enclosed foreend. Trying to see if I can 3D print one.

Let me know what you come up with, was thinking I could get a grey ops thumbrest but the shield gives a lot more area to use.

Yep, though mainly just to block the holes. Not that we can even reach that far with the arm. More of an aesthetics thing.
