I just purchased a new 6mm BR Lawton 400X in a wooden laminate stock for shooting 600 yard f-class. I asked a gunsmith if it would be possible to install an Anschutz/UIT rail and he said that the stock would not be strong enough to support the rail since it was wood. I have seen other rifles which with wood stocks which have rails, but maybe those rifles have some type of large aluminum bedding block, or are bubba jobs? I would really like a rail on my rifle so I can attach a bipod, and still be able to use it with a bag if I want to. Do I have to get a new composite stock, I really don't want to spend that much.

Take your stick to a wood worker or cabinet maker and he will rig up a jig and drop a router on it. After that all you need is some marine tex and your rail. I believe you can get an Anshutz or Freeland rail for about $19.00 +/- (it's been a while since I looked) from Champions Choice or other places. Make sure you know which one you get the T-slots are different. Oh speaking of T-slots that is another viable option. Check a wood working supply site like Wood Crafters. They have T- rails and 1/4-20 accessories. More ways that one to skin a cat.

Cheers,

Doc
