I know there are some differences between the two. I've seen some differences mentioned but I couldn't find any direct comparisons between the two ie; design, materials, build quality, contruction(like the action bonded on the AI's) etc. I am not trying to start a flame session here, just curious about the differences. I've handled a couple of the AW's but never extensively and never shot one. I have a GAP 6.5CM built on a templar now and was looking into Badger build for .338 Norma but, trying to determine if the AI in 338 lapua is worth the extra $$$. I am looking for a rifle that I can "baby" even less than the GAP so if someone could walk me through the differences between the Badger, AIAW, and the GAP crusader setup, I would appreciate it.

Like a lot of people, I was excited about the Badger actions, but having to watch my friend go through such a painful process of sending his brand new custom rifle back several times to fix problems with the action, I'm having second thoughts.

All I can tell you is that my friend had a complete rifle built on the Badger 2008 action and over the last six months it's been back to the factory at least three times for reliability fixes. I'm not saying this to bag on Badger - like I said, I love their products and I hope they get things sorted out with this action, but the result of which was my friend throwing up his arms and buying an AI.

Who built the rifle? As far as reliability that sounds more like a chamber issue than a receiver issue.

I'd guess that it's not that at all.
I'm troubleshooting a trigger/ignition issue right now, still. The bolt went back for a Badger recall, replaced FP spring, etc. It worked better with a CG Jackson trigger, but I wanted single stage, I should have stuck with CG I guess. I think it could be the Timney causing an issue, I've got a different trigger on the way to try.
It's mostly the first 100 actions I believe (they made some changes since then), but that's what happens when you want to be bleeding edge....sometimes it hurts.

A recall? The only reason they changed the receivers is so they are more uniform with the long actions, as those were designed after the short action. It makes more sense to have parts be the same/similar than each having it's own parts.
I still don't see how it's the receiver instead of how it was setup.

So not technically a recall....companies do that when their product is harming people. A retrofit would have been a better choice of words, they told me to send it in and they paid for shipping both ways, that indicates they knew it was a problem that needed fixed.
The receiver is just a block of steel....nothing wrong with it. The bolt, firing pin, cocking piece, etc might need some fine tuning.

I have an SH Valkyrie in .260 and have had zero problems with the Badger action. I have shot it in a couple of tactical competitions and have found it to be very reliable and accurate.

The firing pin is threaded and needs to be set at the correct spot to work reliably. If that's not set, then you could have ignition problems, but that's not a defect or problem, the gun plumber didn't do their job correctly.

At the very least you should have your firing pin spring replaced, the springs in the first batch were not what Badger had hoped for, from the mouth of Marty....call him.

Well guys first let me say that I don't have a dog in the fight when it comes to comparing the AI and the Badger M2008. Mainly because I don't own an AI but I do own a Badger M2008 that was built by American Precision Arms.
When I first picked up the rifle at APA Jered and Dave informed me that they had a couple of light primer strikes during the accuracy confirmation process. (Something that I personally think all custom builders should do with every rifle they build) Anyway, Dave called Marty and told him about the problem and Marty told Dave they had some issues with some of the firing pin springs as Jason mentioned above. Marty sent a new spring at no charge to APA and it was installed and tested a few rounds everything worked fine.
Well after I got the rifle home and started to shoot it some I still had a few failures to fire but they were very inconsistent. Usually only 2 or 3 rounds out of 50 or so shots. Not a big deal to me the ground hogs weren't shooting back. I was thinking maybe I had a bad batch of primers due to the inconsistent issue. Well I tried a new lot of primers and still had the same issue, 2 or 3 FF's out of 50 or so shots. So rather than bother the guys at APA I called Marty because I was aware of the spring issue and wanted to ask him what he thought.
Marty told me without even blinking an eye that they had made an upgrade to the bolt that would fix the problem and to send my bolt back and they would upgrade it at no charge to me, shipping or repair cost. So long story short I sent it back and it was upgraded and turned around very quickly and several rounds later I have not had any more issues.
I am one picky and hard to please bastard, but in my book that is great customer service. No questions, no cost, admit there is an issue, confirm they have a fix and fix it in a timely manner. In my humble opinion the Badger M2008 is a great action and as always Dave and Jered at APA did a great job building the rifle and it is a tack driver!
Hell I like the action so much I am in the process of getting the parts rounded up so that APA can build me another rifle on a Badger M2008 Long Action this time.

Trust me, if I didn't think it was a good solution I wouldn't have invested in my 338 Norma build. I have a SA & LA now, the LA is gen 2 and has shot flawlessly.

The "better" one appears to have a larger space in the housing for the cocking piece to move within. Timney may have fixed the issue. I tried 2 Rem 40x triggers as well, but had issues with those as well.

I have not...but that doesn't mean much.
It "appears" that the Timney that I was using has a thicker housing on each side of the sear. This might have been causing the cocking piece to hang up and/or drag on the housing .
The other Timney actually has a relieved area on the housing, like they saw this issue and worked on it, so that may very well fix MY issue. I have noticed a lot of Badger builds using Shilen and Remnigton triggers, if the Huber has the same sized sear/housing then it should not be an issue.

One thing I'd like to throw in is that without the badger being fully bonded to the chassis, it's more comparable to an AE mkII. I think it's a bit of an unfair comparison in price and features to an AW because of the bonding alone.

Spend the extra money on that AI. The Badger action is an excellent piece of machining, but the AI is tried and true.
I have fired a AI Magnum chambered in .338 Lapua. Very positive feeling, smooth, action on Federal factory Nosler Accubond. As well, excellent factory headspacing.
Reliability was A1. The gun owner had had nearly 1000 rounds through the weapon before we went out and shot a box... Not an issue and a consistant 3" group @ 250yrds for me(he got 1.5"
, but his weapon..) and 6-10"@500yrds..And this is an out of the box piece with a Leupold 6.5-20x50..

I have 2 BO actions, one built, and one being built, both by GAP... My Badger rifle shoots awesome, and has run fine with a standard 40x trigger. I had one instance, in 300 rounds of firing, where it failed to eject a spent case. I'm running a Gen 1 action and have yet to send the bolt back for Marty to make the mods though.
I didn't not buy a AW in lieu of a BO, I bought a BO in lieu of a Templar or Surgeon action. The AW is still in my future.

Good question, truthfully I don't know as there are plenty of actions that shoot extremely well without it. But I'd guess it makes it a bit harder to shift your zero from drop/shock... and from what Marty says, it doesn't sound like that is impossible to do to a M2008 in an AICS.
