Accuracy International AX338 need help gearing up

Hi I have lurked over the pages of this forum every now, and then over the years when I have been around a computer. It's a nice forum.

I'd like to hear from the men whom are in the know from experience.

I just recently bought myself an AX338

Will be using the rifle for hunting. Also for shooting at steel targets at my home range. I'm not a competitive shooter.

I need a scope, ring's, bipod, and a real good case.

I have decided to go Schmidt and Bender for the scope. The MSR reticle looks overwhelming interesting. I'm not the most educated man in the world, but I think with a little coaching I could learn how to use it.

The scope rings I'm thinking about buying are the Accuracy International rings or the rings from Badger Ordnance.

I like the way the Atlas bipods look. Never held one in my hands so can't say much other then that.

I'd appreciate any wisdom. Thank you in advance.

The MSR is great but, I think for the purpose you stated it would not be utilized to the fullest.

P4 reticle would be my choice for hunting and target shooting.

Get the Atlas bipod, alloy rings (there are many good brands) no rust, you could always do a Pelican 1750 case.

Only thing I can give advice on is the Atlas, buy it and you won't be disappointed. It is a great bipod if not the best and well worth every penny. It is very solid and I like the fact that you can have a good range of placement for the legs to get the perfect height that you need and it locks up solid, I have had nothing but great experiences with mine.

Ill agree on the Pelican 1750 case.. have boughten one for every one of my guns and they are amazing. Even tested their waterproof and floating feature (not on purpose).

The military uses them to ship rifles all the time so they are definately airplane safe. Have not ran one over but would bet you could drive over one and it would be fine.

Cannot go wrong with Pelican

Having owned AI rifles for a while, one observation I will give is that as time has gone on I've graduated away from big heavy cases to lighter stuff. The reality is you have one of (if not the most) robust rifles in the world. I toss it into a drag bag and in the back of my truck with targets and all kinds of shit that could hit it and then bounce through the desert to go shooting. Never had that cause a problem and neither have several friends who do the same with a huge variety of rifles just put into a drag bag. Unless you plan on flying with the rifle, the hardcase is a waste of money and space/weight.

Tough/tougher than pelican and much lighter. Brack the owner is an awesome guy!

Cant go wrong with any of the pmii's just get mil mil ccw.

+1 on the Atlas - I've got three now....best bipods I've owned. On my AW a V8 with V2 Spigot. No problems to report and it keeps the bipod low and out front. IMHO this gives the best balance and feel to the rifle.

On the scope mount/rings....did you get the dovetail or picatinny on your AW?

I've never had any issues with my AI mount on the dovetail in seven years of ownership so hesitation in recommending the "matching collar and cuffs"

I have a set of Badger rings for a future build - they look well made and robust.

I would get the AI scope with the S&B 5-25 x56 with the P4 would be a great scope for a 338. A hard shell case is good for traveling but they are a pain all other times. Get a good soft case as well which can be used as shooting mat as well.

Ok, I will go to Schmidt and Bender's website to look at the P4 reticle.

Keep in mind, I am not familiar with target turrets or scopes with this much magnification.

I have been looking into the 3-12x50 PM II , 4-16x50 PM II , 4-16x42 PM II LP

But to be honest, I don't have the experience to make and educated decision.

Does Atlas make a bipod that is tall enough for shooting in the sitting position as well as prone????

You make a good point. Although, I do tend to baby my things. Is there any particular bag that you recommend ??

Update.

This is what I ended up buying.

Scope 5-25x56 S&B PMII H2CMR reticle DT CM CCW (not an easy find readily available)

I must admit trying to find a 4-16 Hensoldt with CCW knobs, and I'd still buy one given the opportunity!

Bipod, Atlas

Seekins Scope rings.

You may want to re-think the rings , depending on the cant of the rail on your AX338 , bare in mind that the 5-25x Benders require a 45 moa forward cant , to get the max amount of Elevation adjustment .

I according to the AI price list , AX338s come in zero , 20 & 30 moa only , so be sure to look at what cant you actually have on your rifle , and go from there .

Thanks for the heads up.

I have a 30 MOA base on my rifle.

The rings are Seekins 34mm, High, 4/6 Screw

Will this work with my 5-25 S&B to achieve maximum elevation??

Yes, I have just about the same setup as you. You will be able to see more than most can hit.

I just have the gen II reticle and the AI 0 moa rings. What length barrel did you get?

Thanks!! I'm glad it will work. I have these rings sitting on the bench already. Scope is on it's way, hopefully get it monday.

My rifle has the 27" barrel.
