I tried to search, but no real luck. Can someone please give me some detailed instructions on how to tune a mag? I’ve tried to bend the feed lips, I ended up moving them too far out and loading the 5th round makes all the cartridges fly out. I moved them back and the bolt binds. I’ve head some talk of sanding, but what edge, inside or out side?
I am using a new accurate mag 5round .308 mag without the binder plate. I’m new to custom actions and I have never had to tune any type of mag before. Here is my setup:
GAP Production rifle
6mm creedmor
Manners stock with the gen 2 mini chassis
Defiance tendency action.
I know that I have asked about this topic in a few threads and I don’t want to seem like a one trick pony, but I really want to figure this out. It’s a sweet rifle, but the fact that I can’t get it to feed from the mag is driving me insane and I don’t want to spend $2-300 on a bunch of different mags to get this rifle to work. I need to save money for new glass.

Would not feed at all. Bolt would not strip a round. Bold was not hitting the feed lips. Feeds fine one at a time. Bolt just hit the back of the cartridge and stop. Once I opened them up, it fed better but rounds popped out of the mag during loading.

Here is the original thread.

Below pic is what has run best on all my mags. I always flare the front of the lips so it releases the cartridge a little earlier than designed. I also take off the bottom plate, pull the spring/follower assembly and with 2000grit and paper polish the inside of the feed lips and ALL of the edges on the lips. Ill then go in with scotch bright and polish it even more.

You have to know if your action is cut to be able to use a mag without a binder plate. If it isn't you could possibly be getting hangups of the bullet tip under the action making it impossible to feed.

Also, before bending anything else try pushing up on your mag as you try and cycle your bolt to feed a rounds. Its possible the mag catch just isnt seating your mag high enough.

Is it just me or does it look like the round is sitting too high? I don’t have and other rifles that are based off the 700. My sakos and tikkas just barely catch the rim. First pic is from when the bold’s first contact with the round. Second is just after the round starts moving. It’s definitely not hanging up on the feed ramp

That seems a little excessive. Id squeeze those lips in until the top of the case rim meets the "rim" of the bolt face. Doi that and polish the inside and edges of lips.

You may be jamming the bullet BETWEEN the lip tops since it sits so high.

I was able to close up the feed lips and it lowered the round. Seems to be feeding better now and will actually hold 5 rounds. I think I went the wrong way the first time. They needed to be closed up, not made wider.
