I am brand new to reloading, and have been trying to get Varget powder to no avail. Accurate powder is available at Graff, but I need info on how good it is for .308,.300, and 50 reloading.

Yes, I did a search, and no dice. Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Accurate Powder?

Not sure what you mean by "how good it is". Accurate makes a number of different powders. I can't speak for .300 or .50, but I've used their 2520 powder with good results in my .308 Win with 150 and 165 grain bullets.

Re: Accurate Powder?

If I am going to reload, I want the best powder available, as I will be trying to achieve the same quality of accuracy as the Federal Match Grade 175s.

At this point I would assume that the .308, 300, and 50 all require a different powder.

Thanks for humoring these newbie questions.

Re: Accurate Powder?

AA 2520 has been called "Camp Perry Powder", it is very nice for the .308. Evidently it has a nice pressure curve for the M1A. I have had good results with .308 loads. Look at AA website or reloading guide for more info.

Re: Accurate Powder?

I use a charge of 45 grains of A2520 behind the 168SMK and 168Amax, both loads were very consistent but I have yet to try them in adverse weather conditions. Both standard dev's were around 15 and max was 60 for both loads. I am approaching full load density, and have read that the sperical powders tend to favor near max loads, I cannot speak as to why. You mentioned varget, both loads were more consistent than any varget loads I did, but truth be told I spent nearly no time developing varget loads once I realized I had 3 pounds, and will not see more for the next decade or so. All in all, 2520 is working very well for me in .308.

As a side note, I also have used 23 and 24 grains of 2520 in a .223 AR with a Kreiger Match barrel with 77SMK's, that was a real suprise, shot at 2670-2700 on the nose, (with 24 grains) and had zero pressure signs. The real caveate also im sure you are aware, of how much nicer sphericals are to work with instead of extruded. My rock chucker doenst like to cleave the cylinders in half and I get very erractic throws with varget compared to 2520. The real test for it will be come this winter, when its not 75 degrees and dry out.

WIth the M1A being mentioned, is there a difference between that system and a bolt gun? I know the M1A reacts completely different than a straight recoil bolt, but not sure if rate of powder burn comes into play?

If the 168 handles the 2520 powder well, does that necessarily translate well into the 175?
I don't believe Varget will be available at any forseeable point, so time to look into Accurate Powder.
Is there any reason it is not as popular at Varget?
Thanks in advance!

Re: Accurate Powder?

Harmonics. That's all it is assuming consistency is perserved. No reason to assume it won't. The real question is does your barrel like 2520 PERIOD, and of course the 175's.

Re: Accurate Powder?

Barikade,
Thanks for the reply. This is going to be complicated to work up correct load when powder is so restricted in selection.

MichaelN,
Good site, I will be in touch to bug you with some questions.
This stuff is totally foreign to me. Appreciate the help!

Re: Accurate Powder?

I use AA2520 in both my Remington 700 and my old Enfield Enforcer with 175SMKs
I use 40 grains and chrony it at 2400fps
It's a light load I know, but I used it mainly in the Enforcer as it's an old and valued gun, and just carried on on my new Remington.
I shot last weekend at Bisley, it will hold all my shots in the 3/4MOA bull to 600yards, and 5.5" V bull at 800 yards in both guns, after that it opens up a bit as the speed isn't there and I guess it's going transonic.....
45 grains and a 155 Lapua Scenar is also a good load for me and keeps the groups tight all the way to 1000yards where last year (with the Enforcer) I got 6 Vbulls and the rest 5s, still MOA - not bad for a 40 year old gun :)

Was ist mit dem IMR 4064? ... Es scheint der werkseitige Ladepulver-Typ von Federal für seine 175-Gramm-Goldmedaille Match-Munition zu sein. Und das mit diesen eher niedrigen 41,7 Körnern Beladung..

I just bought some Alliant Power Pro 2000 to work up some loads for my 308 during the pandemic. I bought it because it appears to safely increase velocity 100fps over almost all other powders. I got the recipe's for free on the federal website and I will be loading their 175 Edge TLR bullet.

It was $100 for 1 lb on gunbroker but I have wanted to try it since the shortage begun - if it shoots well I will develop the load and then wait for the crisis to end before buying more - fortunately I had the bullets and brass already. Considering the unavailability of ammo I swallowed the price.

I use Accurate MagPro in 300-WM, 300-PRC, and 338-LM with good success and solid consistency. Used to use Accurate 4350 in 6.5-CM, until I got a few jugs of Winchester StaBall 6.5 ... which is awesome for that caliber (and for my son's 30-06). Bottom line ... Accurate makes good powder, and I've actually been able to find enough to stock up over the past few months.

Oops, in German in place of English... Beg your pardon please. Let's do it better :) :

I do not reload so far.. What about the IMR 4064 ? It seems to be a widely used powder. Not unknown.. And even the choice of Federal for their .308 Win. 175 gr Gold Medal Match the civilian version of the MK 316 Sniper Ammo.. .

4064 is an old 308 standard, you should have good results with it.

Thanks spife7980,
Hmm.. Old 308Standard means here ?...
Good results with the 175gr-Loads in special or are here several favorites ? :) The big choice of powders irritates me quite a bit.
Background is: I try to get some info for loads with this and higher bullet-weights until 185-190 gr. in general. Practical ecperience is always precious..

Not quite. There are two FGMM 175gr loads: GM308M2 and GM762M2 which uses 4064. GM308M2 uses something similar to AR Comp if not that powder. GM762M2 is not very common. It uses a military case. GM308M2 uses a commercial case. That one has been known to use Reloader15, 4064, unknown ball powder, maybe AR Comp, etc. I have pulled apart several lots in the past and it always varies.

Oh.. That is interesting - it answers the question of this two Federal Ammo-Boxes clearly. They irritated a bit.. . Thank you !

Could you compare the muzzle velocities with the different powders within this load, perhaps ? In an 24-inch-Barrel-Rifle ?

It would be great to know that the other two powders do not exceed the MV of ca. 2'540 f/ps.. . Because I can't delaborate my GM308M2-Federals..

Has anybody else experience with velocity and accuracy with the IMR 4064-Variant in the GM308M2 in a 24-inch-Rifle, please ? Because I've the impression that the Federal-Ammo-Examples here have this powder type... At least its a much much smaller quantity of them here.

Thanks.
