Have you done it/had it done?

What did you do?

Is it like a centerfire? Blue print the action, true the boltface, polish, fit, etc...? This is assuming it's already in a chassis and the barrel is truly free floating.

I feel like I'm going to have enough in this "budget" rifle I could have bought a Voo-Doo, but I'm down the road already...

What is it you're working with? I dicked around with a couple of 455s, one turned out great (Lilja .17HMR barrel, MPA chassis, stoned and polished sear), the other one (.22 factory barrel, McMillan Rimfire Magnum stock then a MPA chassis), not so much. I ended up side-lining the .22 and got a Vudoo.

You know what I'm about to say, right? That's right, just go ahead and get a Vudoo. You'll save yourself a bunch of time and effort.

@kl3309 I know you’re correct, but I’m in this one for interest. I have an older bolt Winchester .22 that turned in some damn good groups when I shot some Eley Club through it, I’m going to put a better scope on it, bed it with acraglass and see how it does with some SK.

Sinking a ton of money and (more importantly) time in it... I wouldn’t. I see it as AI vs. custom, the brand name holds value better. At the end of the day it’s still an accurized 455, etc.

I worked on a Ruger 10/22, 2 Kidd 10/22's and a Ruger RPR. After a year of mixed results and folly I sold 1 Kidd, the RPR and have the Ruger Target rifle up for sale. I bought 1 Vudoo for my wife and have my Vudoo on order now. Looking back I obtained a good education on the platform and process but concluded that it is nothing like the process I go through for centerfire. In the beginning I couldn't bring myself to spend the money for a Vudoo. Now it was easy to order the 1st one and a no brainer to order the 2nd one.

The majority of my 22lr frustration is gone because I don't need to figure out the rifle any more, just elevation and windage.

I bought a Ruger 17 WSM several months ago. When I got it, it was all stock no changes. Now, nothing is original. Replaced trigger with JARD, had bolt worked and barrel replaced by Randy at Connecticut Precision Chambering. I also have a stock coming from Richards Microfit Stocks.

I plan on this being my primary sage rat rifle.

I shoot rimfire benchrest and any benchrest shooter you talk with probably does not have a stock rifle. Sometimes it may be little changes, trigger pull weight, bedding, etc. or they buy an action and build what they want. That's what I've been doing. I don't have the tools or knowledge to do this type of work so I use knowledgeable gunsmiths to do the work.

I don't have the 17 WSM up and going yet since I'm waiting on the stock, but I'm already planning on a .204 build.

Accurizing a rimfire was done for the sole purpose of learning the process.
Pillars, bedding the receiver, EPS chambered Lilja barrel,
barrel bedding, polishing the firing pin, reshape the tip of the pin,
adjust the firing pin spring, barrel block stock, replace trigger
and find an optic to match the precision desired. Tuners.
Followed by years of ammo testing, still.

I put the Savage on the LSS-22 an hour ago. Hopefully the stock and grip arrive tonight so we can shoot tomorrow...

Mine is ready to go. ARCA rail, Tactical Deluxe Grip, Cronus BTR. Now if it will stop pouring. I'll be putting a Lilja on it after testing the MDT chassis with the OEM barrel.

I didn’t spring for the MDT stock or grip. I went with a BCG Gunfighter for both. Cost about a third.

This is all what MDT sent me to review for the Hide. The folder they sent me is rock solid. No wobble. I like it a lot. I bought the ERGO Tactical Deluxe grip myself. I really like it so far. Looking forward to getting it out to the range and putting it through its paces.

Mine turned out pretty good. Everything fit tight and very solid. I can’t wait to test it out later this week.

I've played around with a 10/22, bought a RPR sent it back due to accuracy and ejection issues and they installed a new barrel and bolt which helped accuracy but no change to the weak ejection issues.

I bought a Vudoo and have nothing but praise for the company and firearm. ;)

Full disclosure - My original intent with the RPR was to convert it to .17 Mach 2.

Really depends on the platform on how things need to be done but what needs to be done is the same. Need a match barrel if you wanna be serious (also must be fitted correctly ex. Headspace, chamber choice, fit etc). Ignition work must be done, trigger, bedding, action work.

If your capable of doing the work yourself you can do a 455 for example for around $900-$1250. If you gotta pay someone it would be higher of course. If I was going to venture into a full custom I would go with a stiller 2500xr and convert out the crap savage mags.

I got mine back from the gunsmith for my LGS. He charged me $100 to true the action, sharpen/reset(?) the firing pin, and put an 11 deg target crown on it... I don’t know what else he did...

I’m super happy with this.
