I have a Defiance action that I’m about to build out. It’s in the raw/stainless/white.... whatever you want to call it. Should I get it coated/melonited etc? Or, would I be ok just leaving it stainless? If so, where would be a good place to send it?

At the very least I would get the bolt which is chrome moly nitrided or DLC coated since it is less corrosion resistant than the stainless receiver. Both treatments will also slicken up the action. However, most people generally get the entire action coated.

Recommended place for nitride is H&M which I believe is the same place Defiance outsources to. Club Custom is the recommended place for DLC.

On my one and only build I coated the bolt in DLC and left the inside of the action bare (after blueprinting). The result when cycling the bolt was very rough. Then I decided to coat the bolt in Cerakote Elite and also coat inside the action with Cerakote Elite. The result was very smooth. It was so smooth I felt like material was removed from inside the action. IMO, bolt and inside action with Cerakote Elite.
