So I recently purchased a Remington 700 and a mcmillan A4 stock in Hope's of building an M40A5 clone, however for some reason my action does not seat into the stock and quiet literally "teeters" back and fourth like there is a high spot.

What should I do? The stock was purchased new, but second hand.

You need to have it fitted and bedded to the action by a gunsmith, preferably one that is also well versed in building m40 clone rifles given the action lug slotting as well as contour / fitting of the SF FA762SS muzzle brake and bedding the PGW EFR.

Are you building it yourself or just gathering up parts?

I guess you didn’t see my question in post #2

Since You’re asking us what you should do, here’s two options based on the info you provided:

1) if just gathering parts, let the eventual builder look it over and tell you what has to be done to correct the problem (obviously, this can be done whenever)

2) If building it yourself or you just want some idea as to what you’re up against, refer to post # 5. Once some pics and/or video are posted, folks can try to help you out.

Sorry. I'm pretty new to forums. I will get a video in the morning for you guys. Currently I am just gathering parts, just need a barrel and the PGW rail to be done and I'll be having it assembled somewhere BUT I am trying to avoid the Smith getting parts and things not working.

Here are some pictures.

Here are some pictures.

Unless there is some major problem with your stock that isn’t visible in the pics, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. Any damage or other structural issues should be sent to McMillan for repair.

That said, my 700 action looked somewhat similar when I dropped into my MCM A4 (I was curious to see how it would fit/look with the M5 bottom metal) and didn’t fit “right” but didn’t think anything of it as it had to be fitted/inletted/bedded anyway. No matter.
All my parts went off to the builder and came back as a fully functioning M40A5.

Just make sure you select someone that is well versed in building to-spec A5s. Can’t stress that enough.

Have you bought the FA762SS?

From McMillan - M40A1, etc., Pillar Bedding.

FWIW, My McMillan A3 was factory pillar bedded by McM some time after receiving it, sometime back in the early 20-zeros. It required sending the barreled action and stock to McM. It's a service, and I'm pretty sure it's not a free one.

The bedding job on my rifle is a work of art, and if it's still an available service, I recommend it highly. I still have the rifle going on two decades later, and it's a great shooter. It is one of the original Snipers' Hide .260 Rem Ghost Dancer Project rifles.

Yep, .308 Winchester....C&H Precision (Buck Holly) - 95% correct...I need to acquire and install the issued m24 trigger - it currently uses a Rifle Basix.

Otherwise, shoots like a laser.

Here is a 5 shot group at 500 with XM118LR. Measures 3” or so center-center on the 8” disc...The shot toward the center-right was made after a windage adjustment.

Who did you have assemble it? .308? All correct?

Nice get. I Need to find a similar friend, lol.

I’m debating doing a built in a 6.5mm based platform later this year but not yet sure on chambering and set up.
