I wanted to build out a rifle for PRS, but I also don't want to tinker that much as I don't have time, equipment, or any real gunsmithing skills. I was looking at going with an action that will accept a prefit and with Proof discounts, I'd go with an action that accepts Proof prefits.

It looks the 3 readily available ones are -

    Impact 737R
    BigHorn TL3 / Origin
    Defiance Ruckus

Curtis -but Frank keeps talking about feeding issues with Curtis actions so I'll stick with the top 3.

They're only +/- $200 from each other so I don't see price being much of a factor. I looked around at some threads around the Ruckus vs the Impact and people say you really can't go wrong, but actions have different feel and to get behind one. I probably won't be able to get behind one until middle of July.

Having not shot anything centerfire but my Tikka T3X and my Vudoo, what exactly ends being that drastically different between the 3 actions?

I prefer not to have to do any special inletting on any of my current stocks, so that might easily just point me to a certain action too, though with a MDT ACC, and the new Manners PRS-TCS it looks like their Rem700 chassis should just work. I run the MDT ACC on the Vudoo and have a Manners on order.

Trigger wise, most likely will stick with my Huber 2-stage, or switch to a TT DIamond.

I plan on running 6CM as I don't handload at all. Which is also why I went with something that can source cheaper barrels and not have to a smith to cut/install it.

    Thanks!

Impact personally especially if you don’t need or want CRF. Just got it all together yesterday and it’s amazing. Only shitty thing with them is some chassis’s (krg, and AI’s forsure) need a little relief for the trigger hanger. MPA’s don’t need any modification and I’ve heard the gen 2 mini chassis’s in the manners stocks don’t need any work either.

I went impact because I read everywhere that they were smooth, don’t bind and have smooth and relatively light bolt lifts. But I may do a bighorn in the future for a 223 build.

People do Tikka prefits. Savages are basically all prefit.
I was considering a prefit, have a Tikka in a 308 and a few gunsmiths in the area have said they don't want to try to take off the barrel w/o just destroying it. And also I kind of like it in 308 just to have one, so I'd definitely want to do another action.

All of American Rifle Company’s actions are prefitable.
I originally was going to go ARC, but then as I was looking at the ARC threads on the forum a lot of users love them, and a lot of users have had a lot of issues with them. So I rather not have to worry about that and I don't see very many complaints from the BigHorn, Defiance, and Impact folks. Though maybe I'm not looking hard enough.

Well in reality if you send your action in once to a good smith any action can get prefit barrels.
    Just sayin,,,,,,
I'll have to look into that, I didn't know that.

I had been stressing the removal of my factory Tikka barrel, but was able to get it done this week.

I used a Brownell’s vise with sporter bushing and a 1 1/4 wrench (box end) around the action. Wrench is little bigger than action (31 mm = 1.22 inches vs 1.25), so I used blue painters tape to fill the gap and protect the action. Key to victory (which I learned from this forum) was to use a dead blow hammer and strike the wrench vs pulling with contrast force.

Hope this helps you. For motivation, I got it done in 5 min once I had tools together.

Thanks for the advice on the Tikka barrel. It shoots 308 just fine and is a great learner/trainer for wind so I'd probably leave it as is... I have R700 chassis so I was just going to stick with a R700 clone action.

For quick barrel swapping, it looks like the Curtis Vector would also fit the bill. Need to read more on that now.

The guy that designed vectors now has his improvements in his own action, terminus zues.

Oh nice, never knew... looking at the Terminus now and it looks really nice.

For the barrel threading, the option of quick change vs full threading - I guess if I'm trying to re-use Proof Research Vector barrels, then I'll need to select quick change Zeus.

How many barrels and how often are you really planing on changing?

I just don't want to deal with a gunsmith really. I'd like to be able to order a Proof Barrel and swap it in. Running PRS 6cm, 2000 rounds a barrel + practice. I'm guessing about 2-3 barrels a year.

It's not as much as the cost, and more of the hassle / down time. Rather internet order, do it quickly w/o hassle at home. Proof only makes barrels for the Vector that I can easily order, so I think if I want to run a Terminus Zeus, I'd want it configured for quick change to take in the Vector barrels.

The quick change feature is very nice. Most consider it over rated, but I do it often ( just about every range trip ). Return to zero is there so long as you record your zero offset between calibers. If you want that feature, then get the Zeus. If you don’t, any of the other actions mentioned at great.

I get my barrels from Straight Jacket Armory.

Probably not a readily available action but SPR/Bugholes made a Bartlein pre-fit for my Borden Mountaineer action - once you have the nut & wrench a chambered Bartlein pre-fit will cost around $550.
