Tell me about it. I was shopping around for lenses for my Canon DSLR. I kept thinking about the badass rifle scopes I could buy for the same coin. A S&B PMII would be a lot more fun than a prime lens for the camera. </div></div>

I'd like to get into a nice camera too... And a better guitar, faster horse and prettier girlfriend.

I just don't have the coin to get a gun every time a breeze blows up my ass. What I have has to fill several jobs. Just like the horses, they either have to have a job or head on down the road.
So my workhorse and true love is my M700 .308 bolt gun that had been metamorphosing over time, still not quite done. Obviously a precision rig used for comps and hunting. My mossy 500 is currently in a tactical configuration for HD and comps, but all I have to do to get it ready for bird season is throw on the long Bbl. My Sig P226 is my EDC that I use at IPSC as an excuse to train with it. The one on the way is the SH group buy AR15 set that I will SBR for ( lets all say it together) HD and comps. And all competitions are to me is just a way of training for whatever the real thing turns out to me. I do however seek to win the long range stuff, but everything else is an opportunity to train.
Once the setup is complete I may trade one in on something that I think might be an upgrade or better suit the dual roles that I have established for each. But mostly my money is then on to ammo and training. I hate to be the guy will all the guns and no real talent.

ATF showed up this morning for a surprise check up, needless to say she saw what I had and had to set aside 2 days next week to inspect.

Serves them right for not making an appointmnet!

I disagree. I know plenty of people that own a single handgun and haven't fired it in decades. I say the person with more guns is more apt to know how to use at least one of them.

I got as high as 7, however i'm down to 3 now, the only ones that I need/shoot. Also, if there was ever 3 types of weapons to own, those are the 3 I have. I have 1 rimfire, 1 centerfire rifle, and one shotgun (with 2 barrels, hope to add a slug barrel soon).

Every American firearms enthusiast should have that as a minimum. Of course having a lot more is just fine, my wife would throw a very dramatic fit. I would like to have another centerfire rifle, but I don't think i'm going to get the ok.

Answer is always the same, one less than what I need, because if I wanted another, I technically could do without it

. I have more than I can shoot and stand to double it through inheritance if I never bought another gun. I have no children of my own to leave them to, so my nieces and buddies kids are set for quite a while. My latest quest is to upgrade the glass on them one by one. It has proven as expensive as the guns themselves. All have had a specific purpose at one time or another. I vowed to never sell a gun again as I always regret it afterwards, so I just keep adding. I only own 2 that haven't been shot by me, one is a 4th generation hand me down and the other purchased as an investment only.

I used to have a shit ton of cheap ones. Now I have a nice amount of middle-low to low-high. I dont care to discuss how many but I spent something like $30,000 on rifles/handguns/parts/accessories last year. This year not as much since I was home from the east half the year.

While over here I buy em, wife puts in the safe. When I get home I usually look at some of them and wonder wtf I was thinking on that one, but it all falls back to boredom and depression. Buying a new weapon or part makes me feel all fuzzy inside

Im pretty sure ATf can show up at your place anytime they want if you own a class 3 item, not sure but thats what i was told.

a shotgun and a pistol. Not as many as I'd like, but realistically, more than I could carry if the SHTF.

I've been getting a lot better in that regard. I sold off a bunch - mostly Western style stuff, some collector pieces. Just too much laying around to feed (different types of ammo) and support. So, I now have 1 shotgun, 1 rifle(.338Lap), four revolvers (all .38-.357) and a couple .380s for running around. One collector yet to sell - a Colt used by Wells Fargo. Then I'll be down to 2 centerfire calibers plus the 12ga. Easier to store and reload, and keep spare parts. May get a nice practice .22 rifle, though, if it would match my AR-30 for feel; I practice in the yard with an air rifle now. Didn't even need a 12 step program, nor did my wife push it, though she reminds me of my announced initial desire to reduce calibers whenever my inner child says "Oh, this is nice" when I see something.

Enough to be needing another safe. That or make the shift to quality or quanity. getting rid of the duplicates is a direction that I need to take. But is 6 .223's really too many? Some shoot the light stuff and some shoot the heavy stuff better!! Maybe 3 7STW's is a little much tho...nah

It's refreshing to hear a good number of folks here who put quality over quantity. On too many boards I've participated in quantity always seems to hold sway with quality guns almost treated with derision at times because of the premium prices.

I use to have a lot of so-so quality guns because I would buy anything that struck my fancy and was $300 or less. When I really got interested in becoming a shooter more than a collector I started to transform my collection into a good working battery selling or trading off that disjointed so-so collection for far fewer but much better quality.

My goal is to have about a dozen total weapons, eventually, of which several will be duplicates of my most essential guns. Not there yet, but getting close.

I know of two men that are sons of an old shooting guru that is in his 80's and he gave the majority of his collection and his love for weapons to them, one of which has aproximately 1000 rifles lining an entire large room. The other son doesn't have as many but still has a large quantity. They are into handbuilt tackdrivers of all calibers not just junk filling a room.

I always claim the number of firearms owned is 1 or 3 or 5 or "I don't know" .... don't think anyone with zero is allowed to know me.

A few people have one firearm (either a handgun or shotgun) for some poorly place concept of personal protection (i.e. they don't practice and/or even know where the ammo is).

The vast majority of "non gun" families have three guns, some shotgun, either a handgun (i.e. in town) or a rifle plus some piece of junk single shot shotgun or 22 they had as a kid or got from family.

The "gun nuts" (to the rest of world) have five guns, including a shotgun, handgun, rifle, a 2nd what every they are interested, in plus that same piece of junk from their family or youth.

The rest of "us" (i.e. most everyone I am friends with ;-) when asked how many guns, have to check do you count muzzle loaders, the extra barrel on the Contender, the bare receiver, the NFA sear for the HK etc. etc. ... My reply is if you have to ASK then you really don't know how many guns you have ;-)

P.S. The really serous guys go by 1, 3 5 or "I don't know" gun safes ;-)

I'm only 21 and have been collecting for a few years. So far I've got a Kimber 45, m&p 40, GA precision 7 wsm with a US optics scope, surgeon 6.5x47 with a Schmidt and bender pm2, custom rem 700 in 22-250 with a mark 4, Rem. 870 12 gauge and I'm waiting on a 243 to be finished. I would say I have a gun spending problem.....

How many do you own? How bad is your addiction? My addiction can't be measured in numbers alone. Like alcoholics, there are functioning alcoholics and binge alcoholics. Mostly I am a functioning gun buyer. I carefully pick the ones I want and practically need BUT on occasion I am a binge buyer. That is how I end up with cannons and telescopes, at times. I don't feel like I own them though; more like I have been allowed to hold them, for a price, for a period of time. Sort of entrusted to me till I pass them on. Yeah....that sounds good. At one point in 99- I had no idea how many!!

But I was hanging ARs off hooks on the safe door
cuz there was NO more room!!!

I've "downsized" since then...
