There's an area on the barrel that always burns my thumb. I don't want to wear a glove. I want to stick something on there like adhesive backed carbon fiber, or some kind of metal tape, or even duct tape. Does anyone have any ideas what will work best or have recommendations for me?

There’s the adhesive stuff used on fire walls in engines.
Aluminized heat barrier tape.
The soft side of some velcro adhesive tape would likely do it. Probably any thick tape would do it too.
Mcfred's velcro idea has some merit. You might try some of that soft, flexible craft foam taped in place. Give you a padded area for your thumb and keep it from being burnt.

They also make adhesive carbon fiber pieces for roll cages that protect where the driver and or the harnesses would scratch up from getting in and out, but I am unsure of the area where you need coverage. Look on jegs.com for that.

This looks like a great idea. I ended up using 5 layers of dark gray extreme weather duct tape. It looked janky so i put some of the skateboard grip tape over it, now it reminds me of my pistol handle. But gaffers tape will be my next try if this is not sat.
