Gunsmithing Adj Butt Plate McMillan A5

Re: Adj Butt Plate McMillan A5

graco adjustable

and a bottom bearing flush cut router bit. Will contour the aluminum to the stock profile

and a top bearing flush cut router bit. Will plunge in the center and follow the tread contour and give you room to thread the butt plate into the stock. Or you can use a plunge bit with a 7/16 cutting radius and a 3/8 shank, so it will cut a little more then the threads. That works better otherwise you have to thread the fiberglass. Not a big deal, on way the fiberflass will help grip the aluminum, the other way uses the set screws.

Thanks Everyone for the info

Goin'Hot & JetMD
How difficult was it to drill that big and deep of a hole in the stock?

What size hole did you drill?

Was there anything else that had to be done to mount the Tubb unit?

Thanks for your input

Re: Adj Butt Plate McMillan A5

I cut the length of the post that extends in to the stock so I wouldn't have to go so deep. I still have more than enough adjustment to go longer than I need to. We just used a cordless drill to make the hole and the stock material is easy to work with. Lay the plate on the back of the stock and mark the hole location.

The butt plate comes with aggressive screws that would do a fine job of holding the plate on. I used epoxy and screws to hold mine of but, I cut length off of the stock to allow a further range of adjustment. I believe the hole size is stated in the product literature...

Mark and drill the hole, mount the plate and then use a scribe to make the plate. Remove it and grind the excess aluminum to fit the stock.

Good luck with your project.

Re: Adj Butt Plate McMillan A5

All In,

I was lucky, the HS stock has a hollow cavity in the butt of the stock. Therefore the Tubb buttplate went in without having to make room.
I pilot drilled the 2 screw hole locations before installing them.
The only other modification which I feel was required, after mounting the assembly I took an icepick and scribed a line around the buttstock where it and the buttplate mated and then removed the BP and sanded it down to match the profile of the stock.
The Tubb BP arrives oversized to allow it to be trimmed to fit your stock.
I did not shorten my factory HS stock, it think the instructions call for removing an inch or two from your stock prior to fitting. My length of pull is 17" so I just installed it as is.
Send me a PM if you need anything else.
Take care,
Chet
