Adjustable Bag Rider

My question is about shooting technique while using an Adjustable bag rider with low profile silver Protektor bag that goes with it.

Are you supposed to use these with a bipod or a front shooting rest? I have accutac bipod and Protektor shooting rest.

Rest: The real question is Are you supposed to shoot "free recoil" to allow the rifle to track backwards with almost no input from cheek, soft shouldering, and grip? If you use bipod do you shoot it the same to allow the recoil to track backwards freely?


My setup is a Bergara 7prc in MPA chassis with 3 Gray Ops weightS and a 419 sidewinder brake accutac bipod.

That's all basically dictated by the type of shooting you are doing.

Im guessing you are shooting just for fun. Paper or steel? distance?

So I am shooting from a concrete bench at 100 yards. On paper. Yes it is for fun and I'm not a competition shooter.

The other day I was at the range and I seen a guy shooting a A.i. 300 prc with the adjustable bag rider and bag to go with it, and accutac bipod with skis on it. He mentioned that he let's the rifle track backwards and he barely touches it even with his cheek. When I went down to retrieve my targets I noticed most of his groups were damn near in the same hole or tight clover leaf. Kinda inspired me to get the bag rider. However I don't have skis or a special mat they slide on.

I think the first question you need to ask yourself is…. “What is the realistic grouping capability of this rifle?” It kind of sounds like you’re starting to search for one hole… or clover hole grouping. The rifle that costs 4x more should theoretically shoot a bit better.

Are you shooting factory or hand loads?
What is your actual grouping now?

As for technique on a bench… I just treat it like a barricade. Natural point of aim, trigger follow through, square yourself to the target. On a bench I load into the bipod and use a pint size game changer as a rear bag

I can make handloads but for now I'm choosing to shoot hornady 180g match ammo. I think I should work on my technique first this is my first magnum cartridge rifle. I've shot a little over half inch but I think I did it by accident. Last time I went to the range it was 3/4. I guess I want to be as consistent as possible and want the groups to be as small as possible. Definitely don't have $11,5k for a rifle to shoot. I think that guy has a lot of bread. I figure the adjustable bag rider would assist in perhaps better accuracy and consistency. I was unsure about tracking and shooting free recoil. I was able to speak with David over and long range and he gave me quite a bit of insite

People who competitively punch paper, (Benchrest and F-class) shoot from a rest and free recoil, most of them use a joystick rest with a solid rear bag. They have their rifles set up to track 100% true in the rest/ bags which takes some fine tuning and practice. Watch some videos.

Free recoil doesn't really work for any practical shooting, (hunting, PRS etc.) but it can make some really good groups.

The ABR is more for ELR. In ELR I almost free recoil. I shoot off a bipod with ski feet, I have a solid rear bag and horse mats underneath for large elevation changes. very light shoulder pressure and the ABR is 100% resting on the rear bag.

You'll have to do some fiddling and see what works best for you. I've tried about 30 different rear bags at this point

If so where did you get it from? One of the last guys I saw at the range had the Accutac ski feet on AXSR with ABR and low profile rear bag with small ears. I didn't ask him about thr mat but he mentioned it. He also mentioned shooting almost free recoil. He mightve been a ELR guy checking the accuracy of his handloads. Dude had a barrel cooler lab radar and was shooting prone. I guess that's why I was searching to see what technique is everyone using mostly. Yours sounds exactly like this guy.

If you want to use that rest you'll have to do some fine tuning with the bags and stop etc. Probably better off/ easier to stick ski feet on ur Accutac.

Read this post and watch this video. The BR and F-Open guns mentioned also (in general) have very specific stocks to allow the free recoil on mechanical rests/rabbit ear bags. Your MPA chassis is not one of these.

And frankly, the adjustable bag rider really doesn't have anything to do with the heart of your question. They provide small adjustments for elevation with main elevation changes made with the bipod. I suppose they also can make the rear bag hand more comfortable depending on the size of your hand.

Rear bag suggestions

Looking for a more stable rear bag I’ve been using the Caldwell v-bag issue is it slides around and I just can’t get it to stay in a good parallel position with the rifles.So it really effects my POI.

I never seen a rifle like that before looks nice. That's the bag I have for the abr. I ordered the ski feet and I'm going to find a mat to use shouldn't be hard. I'm hopeful I can shoot the rifle at its best with more practice..... with what I have now i know someone else can shoot it under half all day consistently.
