So I'm doing my research and I need some advice.

I'm currently shooting 175 SMK reloads. My accuracy is fine. Stock action and barrel. Bolt on mods as one would expect. My problem is the barrel is a 1:12 twist and its a VTR in .308. My main issue is the barrel heats fast and the built in muzzle break makes it jump funny on the bipod. That makes for difficult follow up shot or keeping an eye down range for impact. Also, 1000 yds is my limit on range and. Go there frequently.

I was thinking of going with either Krieger or Lilja barrel. Lilja has a sendero contour 1:10 twist in stock. I wanted to keep the muzzle end at least .8" for performance. And the overall length around 20".

Question is I do mostly precision rifle shooting. Which twist rate is best and which contour. Will the Sendero contour be suited?

Thanks.

If you barrel is shooting good, there's no reason to rebarrel. Shoot it until its worn out. What do you expect to gain from a 1:10"?

If the gun "jumps funny on the bipod", its because you're needing to work on your fundamentals. You should get some training or even subscribe to the training lessons on the Hide here. The problem isn't the gun, its the shooter. Why do you think a new barrel will stop the hopping?

The brake isn't going to make it hop. Your fundamentals are off one way or the other, perhaps its noise? Have you considered just having the barrel cut off and recrowned behind the port?

Yeah those VTRs have a triangle barrel, which was a gimmick, but if its shooting good, he just needs to get the fundamentals down and it'll be fine, ports or no ports.

Your not the first person that has found the factory "cut in" brake on the VTR to be difficult. As you well know, the appropriate twist of your barrel is related to the selected projectile and a 1:10 seems to work well with a generous bullet range. I believe the "Sendero" contour is a long action "Heavy Varmint" so it might not be the best option for your .308 (guessing its a short action) although it would finish at least at your required 8/10ths. I would speak to your gunsmith before I purchased one, just "in case." As always.................YMMV.

Thanks for the response to one of my questions. Obviously, I'm asking questions about my fundamentals. Not sure where in my original post I was asking about fundamentals. /end sarcasm.

As I said, I have no issues shooting anyone else's rifle or my other savage.

If someone can honestly answer my original question w/o being snarky or plain outright an asshat, I would appreciate.

As was noted by Prejudice, some people have had issues with the "Star Wars" VTR triangular cut in break and that is one of the reason why I want to change it out.

Thanks.

Lilja makes good stuff 20" kinda to short for what I like but to each his own! The "jump" / muzzle flip from bipod rested shooting may also come from the VTR stock as i remember it wasn't the best in the Rem. line up of stock choices! I would say get yourself a nice B&C, HSP, Manners, or MCM stock..
