Im sure this topic exists, im just apparently too stupid to use the search function well enough to find it, lol... feel free to reply with a link if you know of the existing thread.

Anyways, I ordered a selection of Aervoe camo paints on a friends research that they had the best among the aerosol crowd.... however, I could not,for the life of me, find matte clearcoat or primer... so, my question is, are their any other good brands of primer and clear that I can possibly buy at a local venue rather than ordering online? I have limited time at home so I want to do this next weekend...

Thank you for your time!

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

I had a hard time finding matte clear for a project of mine. Ended up using four coats of satin and hitting it with 600 grit. Same destination different road.

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

Look under the "Sniper's Field Photography" section and find the "Krylon" thread. A lot of info and ideas there. I found everything I needed at Wal-Mart and have seen the same stuff at Ace Hardware store... including the matte clearcoat.

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

i have used Kyrlon flat clear and satin clear with good results. You can also buy automotive clear in flat and satin now, or buy a flattening agent for the regular clear, at a lot of parts stores.

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

If You can't find matte clear at Wally world or a hardware store check at crafts stores for Testors dullcote. It's pricey at about 5-7 bucks for like a 3 oz can. It has a reputation as the flattest matte clear in scale modeling.

I dunno if you ment you were having trouble finding primer or flat primer. Rustoleum sandable auto primer (walmart) is flat and provides a good base for color. Krylon primers are also flat can't remember if they say so in the can.

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

Cool, i was looking over Rustoleum paints at the Home Depot im at atm... I was just saturated with too many choices and not enough info, lol... the wet-sandable auto primer is good though, ehh? good... they have matte rustoleum clear too, dont know how it stacks up to krylon

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

And my only other prep question is... prep. This is going on an M700 SPS with badger metal and an SS 10x42... and possibly my DPMS AR-15 and Acog, both have stock finish atm. Do I need to sand them at all? the SS? the metal or plastic stock ((Mcmillian is STILL under construction for another month...*sighs*)) and if so, what grit is recommended?

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

check out a few painting and paint and even a recent airbrush thread for some painting prep tips. i cant recall anyone sanding anything but i recall red scotch brite pads and also there are some prep tips in there too. clean and degrease and clean and degrease. plus you will see a thread where a guy painted his rifle and scope and then took it all off and you couldnt even tell it had ever had paint on it. brake cleaner is what alot use to degrease. wear gloves. but some stuff got sanded, some didnt. there are a ton of how to paint your rifle threads with info on here too. from using grass and leaves to full on zombie chicks, we have it all here, just gotta search

Re: Aerosol paint questions...

Degrease completely wear neoprene gloves. IF you prime you don't need to prep the surface outside of cleaning as the primer is the surfacer. Especially auto primers are self leveling to a certain extent, best part of priming is removal to the guns original condition is easy. But it can also be less durable.
