Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes
Militant83,
Let's see, you want to do recreational tactical precision shooting. Once you put Tactical into the sentence, you are automatically talking some kind of ranging reticle. Mildot, TMR, MP8, MLR, a MIL or MOA based reticle called something, with either dots or hashs or both.
That because in Tactical shooting you will be both ranging and using hold overs/unders for elevation and hold offs for windage with your reticle. So frankly a duplex will not cut it. A Duplex is a fine hunting reticle, and for shooting known distances, but as a Tactical reticle it is generally a piss poor choice.
Since you put Tactical and Precision into the same sentence, then you must start considering reticles and knobs. Right now your only considering what scope to buy and for how much, and not what you need to accomplish with them.
Speaking reticles and knobs only; they come in 3 flavors: MIL/MOA; MIL/MIL; and MOA/MOA. If you do not know what they mean, please learn and understand BEFORE you plunk down $1100. for a scope. Reading the Optics FAQ on top of this forum is a good place to start.
After you grasp Reticles and Knobs, then learn about Focal Plains. Variables scopes come in two flavors: FFP First Focal Plain, and SFP Second Focal Plain. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but you need to understand their functions before you buy anything. Also scope power, and adjustment range are important factors in a buy/no buy decision when considering different variable or fixed power scopes.
Bottom line, read and learn more. Take all advise given here with a grain of salt. Every shooter here has their likes and dislikes as far a scope brand. We each taper our advise with our own prejudices.
So which scope should you buy? I don't know, you will have to decide for yourself. It's hard to find a consensus around here for the "best" $2500. scope. Finding the right $1100 scope, and getting two people to agree is damn near impossible.
But remember, the more you read, and the more you learn, before you buy now; the less likely you are to come back here in 3-6 months and say: Now which scope should I buy????
Good luck,
Bob
