Rifle Scopes Affordable tactical long range scopes

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

They will all get you out to 1000Y.You will need an 20-30 MOA angled base or some rings with the same slope.

This will allow the scope to be near the middle of it's adjustment range at longer distances so you won't run out of elevation in your turrets.

Good models, and $700-800 does not translate.....However, adequate models can be found in that price range:

In no particular order:

SS 10x42 HD & 16x42mm non-HD
Bushnell 4200 & 6500 Tactical Models
Nikon Monarch X Tactical
Falcon 4.5-14x44 & 5.5-25x50mm
Any Sightron SIII with turrets
IOR 10x42mm & 16x42mm
Vortex Viper 6.5-20x44mm & 50mm
Weaver Tactical's

Out of that bunch, the SS 10x42HD, IOR's and Sightrons will have the "best glass". The Sightron's will have the "best" repeatable adjustments. The Falcon's will give you both MIL/MIL and FFP for the "best" price. The Bushnell's have the "best" warranty.

It's a mixed bag, but I'm sure you will find something you'll like.

Just IMHO, YMMV....

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

If you can live with a fixed power the SS 10x HD is the best scope you can buy for under $1000 period. Those who have and use them believe it is one of the best 10x scopes made period. And if you can live with 9x on the top end the SS 3-9x is the best variable under $1,000 period.

They have very good glass, excellent repeatability and have been built extra strong in all the right places to be very durable even on guns like an M1A.

You would have to spend a lot more money to get more scope than one of those.

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

you ought to be able to get a leupold mark 4 for 7 to 800 bucks.

If you can up it 200 more and get a used USO ST10 for around 1,000.

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

OK I have decided to make my max budget for a scope around $1000 heres what im looking at Leupold 3.5-10x40 Mark 4 LR/T 30mm Riflescope
This ranges from $999-$1100 depending on the reticle duplex or mildot

Any thoughts on this scope? Whats prefered mil dot or duplex

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

Militant83,

Let's see, you want to do recreational tactical precision shooting. Once you put Tactical into the sentence, you are automatically talking some kind of ranging reticle. Mildot, TMR, MP8, MLR, a MIL or MOA based reticle called something, with either dots or hashs or both.

That because in Tactical shooting you will be both ranging and using hold overs/unders for elevation and hold offs for windage with your reticle. So frankly a duplex will not cut it. A Duplex is a fine hunting reticle, and for shooting known distances, but as a Tactical reticle it is generally a piss poor choice.

Since you put Tactical and Precision into the same sentence, then you must start considering reticles and knobs. Right now your only considering what scope to buy and for how much, and not what you need to accomplish with them.

Speaking reticles and knobs only; they come in 3 flavors: MIL/MOA; MIL/MIL; and MOA/MOA. If you do not know what they mean, please learn and understand BEFORE you plunk down $1100. for a scope. Reading the Optics FAQ on top of this forum is a good place to start.

After you grasp Reticles and Knobs, then learn about Focal Plains. Variables scopes come in two flavors: FFP First Focal Plain, and SFP Second Focal Plain. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but you need to understand their functions before you buy anything. Also scope power, and adjustment range are important factors in a buy/no buy decision when considering different variable or fixed power scopes.

Bottom line, read and learn more. Take all advise given here with a grain of salt. Every shooter here has their likes and dislikes as far a scope brand. We each taper our advise with our own prejudices.

So which scope should you buy? I don't know, you will have to decide for yourself. It's hard to find a consensus around here for the "best" $2500. scope. Finding the right $1100 scope, and getting two people to agree is damn near impossible.

But remember, the more you read, and the more you learn, before you buy now; the less likely you are to come back here in 3-6 months and say: Now which scope should I buy????

Good luck,

Bob

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

Many of the brands mentioned will get you what you want, but I have to throw my vote in for the Sightron SIII. For the dime you pay, these are good scopes. You can get their 6-24x50 model with the Mil-dot reticle. Look for reviews online and you will see that most people really like them.

Re: Affordable tactical long range scopes

I just received my Falcon Menace 4x14x44 FFP from Wonders Optics last week. Matt just received a shipment from Falcon so he may still have some left...

Don't waste your money on that Leupold when you can get the 3-9x Super Sniper for $600 which will walk all over that scope in every single way.
