I recently got my dad a rap and am not impressed at all on how flimsy the stock is. He doesn’t shoot a lot but I was showing him and now he thinks it’s unacceptable, lol! Just wondering if there are any decent, cheaper good alternatives out there for this gun. I was thinking the bravo but don’t believe it’s inleted for that yet. And even that might be too much.

I never thought about the the magpul. Thanks

And on the one from stockys, it says sporter barrel channel, is the rap barrel considered sporter?

I've got one in a Magpul. It's a great stock. Stiff enough in the fore end and includes the bottom metal and 1 mag. The only turn off was i had to buy a lower cheek riser because my scope is mounted low. You also have to remove the cheek riser to pull the bolt. Not a deal breaker cause I don't clean til the accuracy falls off anyway.

FWIW. I installed a customers RAP into a magpul hunter stock the other day. Pretty slick setup.

I spoke to them about this when I had my RAP. They said you might have to put in some minimal work to open up the barrel channel but really not too much. If it were me, I'd pick that over the magpul every day of the week and twice on Sunday!

I have the Magpul hunter on a RAP. Works well. Its a good blend between options and price. Some things I really like about it (weight, AICS mags, LOP), some things I do not (cheek riser system, removing the bolt is a PITA). At the time the only choices were a Boyds, Stockys, Magpul, and MDT LSS system. I went with the Magpul. You should definitely look into the new MDT Oryx chassis. It is available for the Ruger American series. It wasn't available when I was making my decision and I sure wish it was. It checks all the bells and whistles I wanted at a reasonable price. After adding bipod mount, QD sling mounts, and a different height cheek riser I am into that Magpul Hunter system for what I could buy the Orxy for.

*edit. Looks like I still would have had to purchase M-lok accessories for sling and bipod mounts with the Oryx also, but I still would have gone that route if it was available at that time. For a little bit more it seems like a much better system than the Hunter.

There is no way to mount a QD for a sling on the front or an Oryx except on the bottom. They also weight 4-4.5 lbs which would be ok for a match rifle, but heavy for a hunting rig. The cheek riser on the Hunter is a pain. Can't pull the bolt without removing the recoil pad to remove the cheek riser.

I filled the forend on my son's factory stock with JB weld and then sanded it out to give him more weight, stiffness, and clearance for loading a bipod. It seemed to help, but he won't ever go back from the Hunter stock.

@bigdaddydmd is right, we make the Oryx Chassis for the RAP but we also do a whole handful of MDT actual chassis too :) The LSS Gen2, LSS XL Gen2 and ESS are all inletted for it, with varying degrees of popularity depending on your use.

If you're looking for a lighter, hunting setup then something like our LSS Gen2 and SCS buttstock would be a great option!

I very recently had a RAP in the 18" 308 version. It was a little too light with the factory stock, and I wasn't much on the ergos of it either. Dropped it into the Magpul Hunter stock and it was like a different rifle altogether. And, I didn't have to remove the standard cheek piece to remove the bolt. When you pull the bolt all the way back, just rotate another 1/4 turn once it's cleared the receiver and it'll come right out.

I also got to handle a customer's RAP in a MDT LSS at my LGS, and it was a very nice little setup as well. Bummed that I didn't get to shoot it.

I was unaware that the oryx was inletted for it. I am going to try talking him into that. Might be hard as he has never used anything but a classic hunter style stock.
