If it's an Apache, why is it getting a yaw warning? Helos don't have yaw issues. If it's an helicopter why is he flying in the same circular pattern at the same speed? Why isn't he hovering? Why doesn't he change direction? At 3:53 why is he telling the guy "hard left"? Why at around 4:51 do the other pilots claim to "have to fly outbound to get space"?

Unless the Army flies their helos much differently, that sure doesn't look like a helo flying.

Notice this video very similar to the one link posted above. AC-130 gunship. More importantly, notice how the munitions fly. Do you see how they come from the left. The gun on the Apache is right under the nose where the FLIR is. Why is it coming from the left in the first video also? The aircraft would have to be flying at a pretty decent clip for this to happen. Why is a helo flying perpendicular to the targets like this?

Yes it is an AH-64D. 30mm is under the nose and depending on pod/rack configuration hydra 70 rockets or hellfire missiles are on the wing stores. Helicopters have yaw issues, that is why you have anti-torque pedals that control tail rotor thrust. The yaw limit that you see in the gun tape is from the TADS ( target acquisition and designation sights) Lon story short is is for the automatic flight control system and the supplemental control inputs that the computer autatically puts in to assist the pilot.

My wife is a former 64 Instructor, Yes that is Apache footage, Casey D is correct on the Tads stuff.

@Mike that video you posted is from an Apache Also. That is the 30mm Cannon and it makes a distinct sound when it goes off.

I remember going into the Tech Library, and using the bathroom. On the kid-sized urinal, one of the 64 pilots put "For Kiowa pilots only." There's poking all around the Aviation Branch, just like the shirt of the Chinook carrying the Blackhawk.

Did you see the end, the Hellfire shot that nailed the dude's head and then landed right in front of him? If you didn't, skip frames on that one. Near or at the end, guy with what looks to be a large shoulder fired missile (I swear it looks like a Javelin).

Please answer my questions and I'm not trying to argue. But everything looks to me like it's a fixed wing and nothing like an helo.

Because right now, I'm convinced it's an AC. BTW, the video was found by Googling AC-130 gun ship so if that's incorrect, that's on You Tube.

Having worked with many 64 crews many times, I would not hesitate to put money it. I cant answer yaw questions but I have sat through endless briefs and debriefs that involved watching footage. We would commonly have joint briefs with both our fixed and rotary wing support.

You can tell that large impact is noting off of a 130 due to the angle of approach vs camera angle. Guided path.

Look at about 55 seconds... you see the hellfire leave the rack.

The sound and burst length of the 30mm is unmistakable,especially after a few times of it coming to help out.

Also the level of radio traffic includes many ground unit call signs, this is mainly the case when 64s monitor company and below nets. Normally dont get that much chatter in 130s. You can hear the gunner/pilot chatter, and then ground unit call signs.

My take.

Knight, I'm not "questioning" anyone, just want to be learn'd.

But the AC-130U does have a 30mm too.

I'll concede it's an Apache but I'm not 100%.

Actually I just watched at :55 and that Hellfire does come from a very conspicuous location so I'm much closer to 100% convinced.

FWIW Mike, I can't see that it's a 130 myself based off of what I've seen, and can't prove it's not based on the HUD data. BUT, there's obviously 2 aircraft, and both 30mm's fire exactly as an Apache with that distinct fire rate. Anytime I've seen 2 aircraft working in conjunction, like a Huey and Cobra, they never just hover and are always following a route around the AO. I've never seen TWO 130's working the same OP.

Also, a giveaway for it is later in the video where you can tell the elevation and distance to the mountains when he is zoomed out scanning the valley. At no time would a 130 be that low when engaging an area like that. They have amazing sensors and work pretty damn high up.

Anyway, my take on it.

Anyway, seems like 2 Apaches to me.

The AC-130 DOES NOT have 30mm....it's 25mm Vulcan, and 40mm Bofors, along with a 105 Howitzer.

The Cyclic Rate of that Gun in the Video is too fast to be a 40mm Bofors, and too slow to be a 20/25mm that's onboard the AC130.

And you can clearly see the Hellfire launch at the beginning of the video. *hard to mistake the Trajectory of a Hellfire

Mike, good to see your convinced. AC130 armament consists of 40mm Bofors, 105 Howitzer, 7.62 and 25mm rotary mg/cannons. No 30mm chain gun or Hellfire. When watching a AC130 gunsight video, you rarely even hear the weapons fire and its a zipper sound (steady Luna. Also remember, AH64 gunsights are gyro-stabilized, so as the sight moves relative to aircraft motion, it gets disorienting to follow exactly what the aircraft is doing. Rotary-wing in fact do yaw (every aircraft does) but the yaw warning seen is a weapon/missile limit being reached. Regardless this horse is DAB and it is an incredible video. Sucks to be the bad guys (which is a good thing)

A hellfire is an indirect fire munitition. It is laser guided but it travels up and picks up the laser code and it impacts straight down on the target. That's why it looks like it is coming from an odd place. Some of the video image is cut out, probably due to opsec. It should have a 10 digit grid, azimuth and elevation of the gun, time date stamp, airspeed, rad alt, Baro alt. and ammo selected and remaining. There may be more, I can't remember.

I flew ah-64a models. That's a d model but most of the symbology is the same. Tads is target acquisition and designation system. The big square box is the hellfire constraints box.

I've only had spooky sparkle LZs. Never had them in action other than when I was medevac support for ranger missions but the 64s did all of the work. I stand corrected on the AC-130U though

I know my facts...the AC130U+4 was an experimental program initiated by AFSOC in 2007 to mount two 30mm Bushmasters and modified 4 aircraft. Program was cancelled and all 4 returned to their original configuration. Hellfire was proposed to be fired out of 120mm cannon (was to replace the 105mm) but NEVER instituted. There is now NO part of this horse remaining above ground.

The cool thing is that the 30mm on a 64 is quieter when directly underneath it.

The barrels, with the Block 2 upgrade, are nicer now then they were with the starting D models. Consider it like upgrading from a factory Remington barrel to one of the top shelf barrel makers. Overheating was substantially reduced.

Ammo capacity is over 1000 rounds for the poster who was interested.

The best thing about the Apache is that it's one of only two helicopters in the Army's inventory, that have air conditioning.

They are pulling off the 40mm, the are replacing them with 25mm bushmasters! From what I understand, they are even putting hellfires on the 130s as well.

HH-60L&M (hospital helicopter, yes the army has them) have A/C (ECS). Make that total 3. The AC in the UH-72 and AH-64 is for the avionics, not the crew. I'm 100% positive that it has always been used correctly (sarcasm!)
