When these mags were announced it was reported that they would also work with .223AI and .300Whisper. The only report I have seen said feeding was not very smooth in .223AI. Anyone have any experience with them in calibers other than standard .223?

Re: AI .223 mags

I havent had my 223AI but a couple of weeks but I have had zero feeding problems through my AICS platform.

Re: AI .223 mags

My 223AI feeds thru a BDL floor plate that was modified for the longer OAL. I just got my 223 Tikka T3 Tactical back from Jeff @ CDI. He converted to an AICS DBM. It's a real slick looking job and I can't wait to get a good weather day so I can try it out.
I think that gun will benefit greatly from the longer OAL allowance of the AICS mags.
Feeding the 223 AI, for what I was told, requires some extra caressing by the gunsmith. The sharp angled brass will feed from the mag just fine but I think the angles of feed area of receiver and barrel have to have some radiusing. My first 223 AI never fed from a magazine properly. APA built the second and it has worked flawlessly.

Re: AI .223 mags

The AI mags feed my 223ai formed cases smooth as can be in an a1-3 and badger bottom metal. I have never, ever had an issue with AI mags and the 223ai. I ran mine at the shooters bash, and never had a problem with feeding. I wouldn't have another 223ai built without the mag system and AI mags.

My hunting rifle is a 223ai with a bdl style floor plate (Badger m4), and I had to tweak the internal mag box a bit to let the 223ai brass fit better, thus feeding with no issues. All it takes is a couple of hard tugs on the internal box mag, which in turn grants more real estate in the magbox for the brass to fit. Your standard 223 magbox isn't designed for the blown out cases of 223ai.

I also had my gunsmith lengthen the bdl magbox to allow for longer seating of heavies. I love the rifle.

Re: AI .223 mags

Thanks for the replies. I have a build in progress and wanted to go with the .223ai, but was concerned about feeding. Sounds like that should not be a problem.

Re: AI .223 mags

You can also modify the 308 AI mags to feed the 223. I did one a few weeks ago and it works well.
It will give you a longer transition distance for the case to line up with the chamber.
