Well seeing that It would take me almost a year to get a Rem 700 5R for the AICS i might as well go and buy the real thing and get the desired performance and rifle out of the box.

As the retailer that would work with me on getting my aw has a huge difference in price between the 300win mag and 308 calibers and i know the AW systems allows for a barrel change I'd like to know what are my options with the 308 and 300.

In essence to which calibers can i exchange the barrel on the 308 and to which calibers the 300win mag ? Sorry for the noob questions but my background is mostly from one shot hunting rifles and eastern block ak styled semi auto military rifles...

Any help would be appreciated.

For the 308 you could go 22-250, 243 Win, 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Rem, 7-08, 338 Federal. Anything with a .473" diameter rim that is shot in a short action
For the 300 anything with a .532 rim diameter excluding any of the long 2.850" length cases, mag length has limits. The WSM's, 7mm Rem Mag, 338 Win, 264 Win Mag etc.

I'd go with the 6.5 family of cartridges if your looking for something pleasant to shoot with VERY high bc's. .260 or a Creedmor. It's cheap to reload for and the recoil is minimal.
Just my opinion. AS

If single shot is an option, a 6.5x55 swede and .284 / 6.5-.284 should fit in the short action AI as well.
Haven't tried, but considered it for 1000y+ comps. Still undecided, might wait and buy long action and make a 300wm/7wsm switch-barrel.

They won't. The rim is a little larger than .473 and they will not fit in the bolt face. I've tried it on 2 different AW bolts I have.

Not to hijack the thread but keeping in line with it, is it possible with an AW338 LM to swap to a 300 win mag barrel and 300 WM bolt body? Sort of a poor man's PSR?

I don't understand. Is this directed at me?? Or did somebody else say something that got deleted??

I mentioned the O word... and mentioned my own government (1000's of miles away from the US ) in a derogatory fashion - what should a guy do they banned reloading - and my original post was edited by a mod... Please do continue with suggestions and ideas.

Buying a new AI AW338 is quite a lot of cash here so i want to make it future proof and have some leeway when it comes to what it can and will shoot in the future.

Thanks

10-4. Yeah, it's not a good idea to say things like that. I just found it in my email.

243 Win and 6.5 Creedmoor (originally a 308 Mk III) from this man and AI have been nothing short of amazing. My newest barrel from Dave, the .243, printed a .194" 5-shot group at 100yds on rounds 16-20 and rounds 21-25 went 1" at 300yds with bipod and bag laying prone. What about rounds 1-15? Load development with nothing over .708" at 100yds.

I applaud your decision to get the AW (or AE) and plan on getting a couple of outstanding barrels too. :)

Luck. I like your thinking. If you are gonna go, don't play around and go out all out haha. You could always get an AE If you didn't want to jump right to the AW. Won't have .300wm option there though

Yeah, when I've written down everything i need to do and permits i need to get to buy a Rem700 then to get the gun evaluated after the stock change, permit to install the muzzle break etc etc... I decided that I'll be keeping my Toyota for a little while longer and stretch for the real thing and be happy out of the box with the real thing and not the lookalike.

It is possible to buy an AW300 barrel, bolt and magazine and convert from AW338.

Well the AW has been my long time silent sorrow from the days I've served and got to read some magazines regarding high precision shooting, saw one in Germany as a kid and was mesmerized since then. And now learning that i have a pretty decent range of optional calibers i couldn't be happier...
