AI AX as a break down rifle?

Good Morning, All,

I was wondering if anyone has used their AIAX as a break down rifle or has made note of it's repeatability after removing and re-installing the same barrel? I searched the site and google and didn't find anything. I also dug through a few pages of the AI picture thread and didn't see anything about it either.

With the folding stock and ability to remove the barrel so easily, lots of people use AI's in this manner. Have seen lots who buy a "mini" pelican case and have the foam cut to hold it all broken down, with or without the scope still mounted.

People get mixed results with repeatebility after removing the barrel. For most it seems to be repeatable but for peace of mind check zero. Usually it's within .2 mils for me on an AT, even BETWEEN different barrels.

Mile High, that's very similar to what I had in mind, although I was planning on cutting a few pieces of foam for a backpack. I wasn't sure if the AX could be used in a similar manner or if there was something unique to the PSR that I'm not aware of. What's tough for me is I won't always be able to check zero when assembling everything, so it wouldn't be worth it to me to spend that type of money if it didn't come consistently back to zero. Bringing the appropriate torque limiters/wrenches wouldn't be an issue though.

Designed for the AX, there are a couple of agencies using the above in a 338 Lapua config. We had a customer shoot 1, unscrew bbl, screw in bbl, torque bbl, shoot 1 for 10x rounds, came up with a 1/2" group at 100 yds. Same can be done with a small pelican case, backpack, etc.

Repeatability is good on my AT with consistent with torque on the set screw.

I zeroed My PSR for the .308 barrel then shot a 1.25” group @ 100 yards of three shots each of .260,.308,300WM, .338 Lapua without touching the scope settings.

The system works well for repeatability. There is more of a shift if the barrel contours are different.

I also change barrels between relays at matches. Just be sure to use a torque wrench on the Cross bolt. I belive the front hard guard comes off to access the bolts for the forearm. I wish this was also a single
Bolt locking system for breakdown and quick build purpose.

RTZ is as flawless on them as your technique.

- Wipe down the action face and barrel shoulder with a clean rag prior to install, and install with the hand guard removed so no debris can be pushed back between the mating surfaces.
- Thread and seat the barrel by hand with the butt on the floor and muzzle straight up.
- Snug the barrel lightly with a wrench. Not torqueing it, just enough to know it's seated solid.
- Torque the action screw with a torque wrench.

Follow the above process and it will be right where it needs to be every time. Consistent technique delivers a consistent result.
