Having some feeding problems with my AIAX chassis and AW mags. If I hold up on the mag it feeds reliably. If it only has 1 round in it, the mag it feeds correctly also. Do I have a spring problem or a mag catch length problem? Action is a Stiller Tac30AW if that info helps any. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the mag catch is too short. You probably already know the position of an AW mag in the chassis is critical- you need to get the mag up further and stay there. It may sound hillbilly as hell, but you can take out the catch, measure the OAL of the part, peen the end out around + .030 (I cant remember exactly how much), then file/grind the end back the part. You will need to smack the mag to get it to catch in the chassis, but the feeding will be good to go with the AW mags. If I remember correctly, doing this will DISABLE the ability to use std center feed AICS mags, the lips will be too high up to allow free passage of the bolt. Either that or make a catch thats longer and needs to be ground and fitted to length

I also have the same problem, also using a Stiller Tac30AW action on a 6.5 Creedmoor. Would so like to find a fix without sending to a smith.

Wouldn't the easy fix be to use AI Chassis mags and not AW mags?

The bolt on the Stiller is not designed to pickup rounds from a double stack magazine, which is why Chassis Mags are single stack. If your gunsmith did not adjust the assembly of the build to use double stack mags you need to use the correct magazine.

It's a chassis, use the right mag, just because you bought the AX version doesn't mean you get to use real AX/AW mags.

I had the same problem with my AX Chassis when trying to feed from AW mags.

If you have a lot of AW mags it may be a good idea to have a new mag-catch machined up or go with what Sonic Crack said.
I personally would make/have a new one made.

In my case I have a Accuracy International AICS chassis system with the Stiller TAC30AW action and I do have the same problem with the all my AW magazines (5).

Because it is a "Chassis System" and not an AW... So it needs to use CHASSIS MAGS... you have to modify things to get a Remington type action to work with an Double Stack Magazine.

Chassis Magazines are SINGLE STACK for a reason... to work with that type of action.

Buy a Real AX or Real AW if you want to use those mags.

The AX chassis uses a slightly different magazine than the standard AI and AW. The AX mags have a small notch on the front that locks into the front of the magazine well and then you rock the rear of the magazine in place against the latch.

So, to reliably feed non-AX magazines in an AX chassis you need to make a modification to the chassis to hold the front of the magazine firmly in the magwell. Or you can weld a small notch on the front of a magazine. Either modification is fine. Obviously, you can't weld the plastic 223 mags. If you don't do this, you can pull down on the front of the magazine and induce a failure. Sometimes running the bolt hard will cause the front of the magazine to tilt down in front causing a feed jam.

The secondary issue specifically with AW mags is the latch length. The best fix is (as already mentioned) welding the tip of the latch and then file it down to the point where it perfectly fits.

I've been running my AX chassis with a Pierce action and standard AI magazines for a couple years now without issues. We fabricated a drop-in part for the modification so no gunsmithing necessary. I can remove the part and use AX mags or install the part and run AIs. We manufactured more of those parts for builds using AW, 223 AI and 338 AI magazines.

Hope this helps.
