AICS compatible 20-round .308 magazine

Hello sh.

I know it sounds weird - but I need a 15 or 20 rounder for my rem700 with surgeon bottom metal.
I do have AICS 10rounds magazines, but I found out I loose too much time on changing mags during IPSC stage.
It could be drum (like for ar-10) or long single-column magazine (I know it will be long)

Can anyone guide me to the right direction where these type of mags can be done on order?

Seriously, I understand you want a single, higher capacity magazine for comps, but if you NEED a 20-round mag for a bolt action rifle...YOU BROUGHT THE <span style="text-decoration: underline">WRONG</span> RIFLE!

Short of custom fabricating one (either from scratch or from multiple 5- or 10-round mags), I think you are SOL.

2. If you never seen conversion for FAL mags doesn't mean they don't exist.
As well there is a bottom metal for rem700 to take .223 AR-mag.

But.

3.I'm fine with my rifle and it's the right one.
4.All I need is couple of hi-caps for standard AICS compatible DBM.

And the question in my first post was if someone can guide me to the ppl who can make me these mags.

I have talked with people who "make mags". In simple terms unless you have a market for these those AICS style mags will cost more than the rifle they area attached to ($5k + for the tool and die work alone)

There was a guy, in WV I think, who put together 3 M11 magazines for me a long time ago. It worked well, but was heavy with 90 rounds of 9mm. I can't remember his name, but maybe it will pop into my head. He (or someone else) might be able to fabricate one for you. Unless you have a tall bipod, you would be shooting off a monopod.

Seems like a person whos good with a TiG could make the body pretty easily. Springs could be sourced from other mags and made to work with the follower. Doesnt seem like too big an undertaking for a good welder.

If you can get me the magazine body dimensions, I will see if I can mate the bottom of the G3 magazine to it. I do that with the Savage factory magazine bodies, as they are very similar in size.

I can make 10, 12, and 15 rounders with cutting the entire tops off the G3's. I should be able to increase the capacity by just removing the outer part of the body.

Just let me know, and I will see what I can do for ya.

Also, if you load you own, the rounds can have an OAL of up to 2.875 inches. Something else to consider.

Just curious, what type IPSC matches do you participate in with a bolt action rifle? I've shot IPSC pistol and 3-gun matches for years and have never seen a stage or match where a bolt action rifle would be remotely competitive.

That said, a 15 round AICS mag would be nice to have every now and then for a sniper type match.

Two Alpha mags on top of each other would not be to much longer than a AICS 10 rounder. Just a thought.

"Remotely competitive" isn't always one of my qualifying requirements for using a weapon in a match.

Hell, I ran an FN49 in 30-06 once, just to see how quickly it could be done (not too badly, but reloading with 5rd stripper clips still sucks). Perhaps he wants to do it "just because"?

How should I measure the magazine? I mean which dimensions are critical and in which units (inches/mm) should I do it?

It started as "just to try" because there were only one or two guys with bolt-guns on competitions - so obviously it was competition with myself. But now there is enough people with bolt-guns to form a "open-manual" class on level III competitions.

Measure the front to back dimensions, both inside and out. Do the same for the front width, inside and out, as well as the back width, inside and out. Basically the dimensions will give me the footprint of the bottom of the factory magazine as to how it will relate to the G3.

I prefer the dimensions to be inches with decimal fractions. As in 2.925" inside dimension from front to back, and so on. If you can take some pictures of the follower assembly, as well as the side rib placements, that would extremely helpful too.

There is no such thing as too much information where this is concerned.

Who knows what OP's course of fire typically looks like, but in my parts, you'd be shooting somewhere in the vicinity of 20-30 rounds max during a given stage, over the course of two or three minutes. It's not going to do wonderful things for barrel life, but I'd strongly doubt it's going to immediately destroy it either. There's stages even in precision rifle matches that tend to require higher round counts in a short amount of time - this isn't much different, really.

I think it is strange he is wanting to use a precision BOLT rifle for IPSC matches. You said you are losing too much time due to a mag change but you are using a bolt rifle. If you are really worried about losing time I would think you would shoot a semi auto.

Build a custom Mag, just make sure its Stagger fed Like an AW not Single Stack like a AICS so you don't have to shoot off a mono pod standing up.

And I know people who change barrels out more often than their underwear...so what? I don't care <span style="font-weight: bold">what</span> a barrel looks like through a Hawkeye if it still shoots to the standards required of it. And if it's a rifle being built for an IPSC course (And why not?! Fuck it, do it because it can be done! It's good manipulation practice, if nothing else.), you could damn near use an unrifled .30 caliber tube and still be competitive. Rifling? We don't need no steenking rifling!

Not true. The chassis doesn't care if its a AW or AICS mag. What matters is the type of action being used.

The majority of actions dropped into the AICS are Rem 700 clones which are center feed, which is why they don't use the AW mags.

I run a M2008 action (which is can take either center or staggered feed) in my AICS along with the AW mags.

If AR-10 in .308 don't die during shooting stage - rem700 in .308 won't die ether.

My exact question was not "what will happen to my barrel" (because nothing will be wrong if it's .308) but - "where can I buy 20-rnd single feed mag for my rem700"

If you can help - do it.
If you want to warn ppl about danger of rapid fire from .300wsm - open another thread.

Somewhere floating around here is a post about a M14 magazine conversion for a 700. I believe it was an Australian company.

I would just stick with 10 rounders and work on that speed reload. Two dead reliable 10 round mags will beat a less than reliable 20 round setup assuming you are not equipped with ten thumbs.

Regarding barrel life: barrels are disposable. The barrel on my match rifle gets smoking hot on a regular basis. My AR10....more so.

My guess is the reason you are not going to find a lot of 20 round bolt gun mags is because guys who need that volume of fire, grab the autoloader. Matches that require that type of "run and gun" are the reason I have an AR10 in my safe.

What's the difference between a bolt gun and a AR-10, DPMS, KAC SR-25, LMT MWS, REPR etc with a 20 round magazine? When he changes barrels he may want to look to the semi-auto guys to see what they have gone to for added barrel life but at least he isn't pumping hot gas and gunk (defined as brunt and unburt powder

) back into his action.
A bolt actioned rifle in a timed competition against gas guns might be a bit tough but with equal sized magazines it might be interesting to watch. Heck a new competition might be getting born

USPSA actually has a precision rifle rules, though no one shoots in it anymore. It's also a 5 round limit.

You can always change the rules to be Limited-10.

If not, weld two mags together and have some custom springs made. Or make some extended basepads.
